Main purpose of job

The British Government is looking for a highly-motivated, exceptional candidate to run a one person UK Government Office (UKGO) in North Carolina. The UKGO is based in Raleigh-Durham.

Reporting to the UK Consul General in Atlanta, the successful candidate will be the UK Government’s local representative in North Carolina. He/she will support the UK’s economic, commercial and political relationship with North Carolina. He/she will develop business links and scientific research collaboration, as well as promoting public policy interests and the UK’s values. The successful candidate will work closely with other UK Government colleagues across the US network, and in particular from the Department of International Trade (DIT), Science and Innovation network, the policy teams in the Embassy in Washington DC, as well as from the Politics, Press and Public Affairs (PPPA) sections.

The successful candidate will have responsibility for managing a small operating and administration budget in line with UK Government guidelines.

*At present confirmed funding for the position runs to March 2021, although we will explore opportunities to extend it further.


Roles and responsibilities

Work with DIT teams in Washington and Atlanta to boost UK trade into North Carolina; investment from North Carolina to the UK; and the number of British businesses with a presence in the State. Monitor local business developments and refer clients to DIT specialists; develop high-quality trade and investment opportunities. Industry sectors for particular focus include: Life Sciences/Healthcare; Technology; Advanced Engineering and Aerospace; and Creative.

Develop and maintain high-level, influential networks across North Carolina to help build the profile of the UK economy in North Carolina and help deliver the UK’s Regional Prosperity Plan in the US.  

Engage with state and municipal government leaders and officials on issues of importance to the UK, such as a UK-US Free Trade Agreement; climate and energy policies ahead of the COP26 Summit in Glasgow in November; the science and innovation agenda; and the strengthening of the economic partnership and regulatory approach between North Carolina and the UK.

Report on political and economic developments in North Carolina to key personnel across the US Network, especially those in Atlanta.

Represent the UK at external functions, including speaking engagements to set out the government’s approach on key issues.

Facilitate and manage visits by senior UK government representatives to North Carolina (e.g. the Republican National Convention in Charlotte in August 2020).          

Bachelors’ degree minimum

A proven self-starter and able to work under limited day-to-day direction and supervision

Able to take responsibility for their own decisions in pursuit of clearly defined goals.

Able to demonstrate a track record of working collaboratively with colleagues across different locations and with considerable autonomy.

Be a confident communicator and networker, with prior experience of public speaking. Able to interact skilfully with external contacts of all levels.

8-10 years of directly-related professional experience, including in a leadership role in either the private or public sector.

Appreciation and understanding of multicultural Britain.

 

Government or public policy experience highly desirable.

Knowledge of international policy issues and the UK.
