The British Embassy in Tirana is part of a world-wide network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas and is looking for an Accountant A2, based in Tirana.

This is for a full-time fixed term contract for 9 months (with no extension) to cover a maternity leave.

The main purpose of this job is to run Post accounts and maintain the Embassy’s official bank accounts and cashboxes held at Accounts Office; to provide a professional accounting service to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) and Partners Across Government (PAGs); also to Liaise closely with the Corporate Services and Programme teams to ensure that suppliers receive their payments on time; ensure bank and cash balances reconcile by the end of each month and to ensure that the FCO’s audit requirements are strictly adhered too.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Work with budget holders and staff to enhance compliance with GTPC procedures for Distribution Sets, Invoices, Debit and Credit memos, miscellaneous receipts, and Network;

  • Post Accounts (NPAs) including correctly accounting for spend and reducing the risk of fraud;

  • Receive, review and submit invoices to the GTPC for processing. Investigate problem invoices and resolve within the deadline provided;

  • Monitor the post official cash box and bank accounts. Process and record all cash payments and receipts, on the NPA as per the guidance;

  • Prepare all Local Staff monthly salaries. Prepare and declare Social and Health Contributions and  Income tax for all local staff on a monthly basis;

  • Assist the Finance Manager in carrying out the housekeeping of the Invoices on Hold, Goods receipted and not invoiced, the Open POs reports according to the Financial Performance Compliance Indicators;

  • Perform the End of Month tasks according to FCO guidance;

  • Work with the GTPC to ensure balance sheet accounts are reconciled on a regular basis;

  • Respond to queries from the Senior Management, GTPC and Finance Hub on financial transactions and submit returns within agreed timelines;

  • Entering and maintaining the Miscellaneous receipts records and ensuring that debts are collected in a timely manner;

  • Receiving funds into the Embassy Accounts according to the FCO guidance and procedures. Performing the Cash In Transit transactions and working with the GTPC on bank accounts reconciliation;

  • Assist the Finance Manager to maintain the Local Budget records by preparing and submitting the Cash Funding Forecast Profiles returns as per the published guidelines and assisting in responding to the challenge sessions with the Regional Finance Hub;

  • Preparing and monitoring an accurate Funding Profile for the Financial Year;

  • To proactively analyse the accounts and highlight discrepancies;

  • To manage the relationship with the local bank.


  • University Degree (Master’s degree or equivalent);
  • A minimum of three years of relevant work experience in similar roles;
  • Effective communication, including written and spoken fluency in English and Albanian and ability to adapt communication style to different situations;
  • Strong analytical and judgement skills;
  • Excellent organisational skills;
  • Willingness and desire for continual learning and development;
  • IT proficiency – Using MS Office (especially Excel).
  • A self-starter that can work well both individually and in a team;
  • Ability and willingness to work effectively and flexibly on special events/occasions in the Embassy calendar;

  • Professional accountancy or business related (MBA) qualifications would be an advantage;

  • Experience working in an international/multilateral environment;

Terms and Conditions:

This is a full-time fixed term contract for 9 months (with no extension) to cover a maternity leave; for 5 working days (36 hours net) per week.

The monthly salary for this position is 127,626 (ALL) gross per month, at A2 level. Please note that staff members are responsible for paying any income tax required by local law.

The successful candidate will be subject to professional background check, security clearance and three months probation period.
