Main purpose of job:

 

To increase Scottish oil and gas exports and contribute to the doubling of UK oil and gas international sales in line with Vision 2035 by:

  • Support more Scottish oil and gas and related companies to access new markets and take new products to international markets, by identifying trade opportunities with key customers.

  • Deliver specialist support to Scottish oil and gas and related companies looking to do business in Mexico, always delivering against SDI and energy sector objectives.

Scottish Development International is the international arm of Scottish Enterprise, Highlands and Island Enterprise and the Scottish Government. We promote the export trade of Scottish companies across the world and assist overseas investors to locate in Scotland. We have a team of well over 1400 colleagues in Scotland and a network of partners, from our universities to industry bodies to contribute to our success. We are a partner of the Department of International Trade and operate collaboratively across the globe. The position will be based in the British embassy in Mexico City, alongside DIT.

 

Roles and responsibilities :

 

Trade Development

  • Identify key customers operating in oil and gas in Mexico and take a strategic account management role, understand their procurement and supply chain requirements and discuss potential opportunities for Scottish companies.
  • Develop and maintain partnerships with other relevant stakeholders and trade associations to identify platforms for collaborative or strategic engagement between Scotland and Mexico in the oil and gas sector
  • Identify and attend sector-specific trade shows, exhibitions and conferences in the market/region to promote Scotland’s proposition in energy; expand your network of contacts; and identify opportunities for Scottish companies.
  • Gather market intelligence and scope/explore new opportunities for Scottish oil and gas supply chain companies. Report on trends to SDI sector teams, companies and partners as appropriate.
  • Feed specific business opportunities to sector teams via the Global Management Team for Energy, trade advisors and work with Scottish energy companies to help them respond to these opportunities. Track progress and update Dynamics as appropriate.
  • Deliver webinars and use social media, including LinkedIn, to highlight key market opportunities to raise awareness of key market opportunities for Scottish energy companies.
  • Take a creative approach to trade development work and look for innovative ways to create demand for Scottish oil and gas services in Mexico.
  • Take a ‘strategic challenger’ approach with key in-market customers and stakeholders to drive new opportunities for Scottish energy companies. 
  • Work with colleagues to scope major cross-sector opportunities in-market e.g. subsea engineering



 

Trade support



  • Work as part of a wider account team to provide trade advice and guidance to companies in the Scottish oil and gas supply chain looking to access market opportunities in Mexico within the sector as outlined in the international sector operating plan.
  • Support Scottish oil and gas and related supply companies with market entry and growth strategies and develop a deep understanding of routes to market, business environment and regulatory framework in your subsector & market.
  • Work with colleagues in Scotland to deliver visit programmes, trade missions and learning journeys for Scottish energy companies, providing added value for participating companies by introducing them to your network of contacts and setting up 1-2-1 meetings for them while in market.
  • Update Dynamics with details of all company support provided and how it has helped to deliver against SDI’s objectives.  Update account team members on the impact of any support provided.
  • Prepare Quarterly Reports to allow for outcomes to be communicated and shared.
  • Develop close working relationships with other partners including DIT, UKIBC, Chambers of Commerce/Trade Associations, GlobalScots, and other in-market industry trade bodies who can add value to SDI’s work with Scottish companies in-market. 





  • University degree in Business or Engineering or related discipline 
  • A minimum of 10 years of demonstrated experience in business development and/or business consulting roles in the oil and gas sector in Mexico
  • Customer relationship management skills, with high levels of confidence and credibility in dealing with senior personnel
  • Diagnostic, strategic challenger, influencer and facilitation skills
  • Ability to apply analytical skills in complex situations
  • Knowledge of international trade and experience of supporting companies to export
  • Detailed knowledge and understanding of the energy sector and ability to engage credibly with senior industry representatives in the sector
  • Market and energy sector knowledge in relation to international trade to enable the provision of advice to companies, colleagues and partners
  • Ability to work on own initiative
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
