Main purpose of job


The British Embassy is seeking an Employee Relations Officer to join the US Network HR team in Washington, D.C. This position is responsible for managing employee relations for 900 staff in 14 posts across the United States. The ideal candidate will be an energetic team player with knowledge of US employee labour and employment law as well as knowledge of US federal and state guidance on discrimination.


Roles and responsibilities

  • Independently resolve and manage complex employee relations issues (including EEOC mediation, terminations, harassment, discrimination, etc) across the US Network while proactively engaging with our attorneys and stakeholders.
  • Discreetly handle sensitive employee issues that could include performance and/or conduct issues, bullying, harassment, discrimination and the full process for terminations including: obtaining final approvals, employee notifications and exit procedures.
  • Develop and implement corrective action plans and conduct investigations where needed to ensure local law compliance (travel required, some last minute).
  • Facilitate educational HR trainings for Bullying, Harassment and Discrimination to all staff within our locations in the US.
  • Assist with the management of the US Network policy for compliance to Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA), Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and other confidential leave policies with the Benefits Specialist.
  • Maintain knowledge of legal and regulatory requirements and assist in maintenance of all Network policies and conditions of employment.  
  • All other duties as assigned.


      Essential on arrival

      • A minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree and 3 to 5 years relatable experience, with a minimum of 5 years experience in employee relations.
      • Certification in Human Resources or Conducting Internal Investigations preferred.
      • Demonstrated ability to maintain confidential information and to act appropriately in delicate employee situations.
      • Proven ability to exercise good judgement with little or no supervision.
      • Experience working in a fast paced environment while delivering excellent customer service.
