Main purpose of job:

The UK Department of International Trade champions open and fair global trade that drives growth, creates better jobs and higher wages, and improves living standards in the UK and around the world. 

This role is a great opportunity for someone to work in a team assisting a range of UK companies to enter the New Zealand market and New Zealand companies with UK expansion plans. It is an exciting time to join the team in New Zealand as the Free Trade Agreement (FTA)  between the UK and New Zealand will enter into force in 2023.

This position will see you providing general administration support for the Director of Trade and Investment (NZ) and project, marketing and event support for Trade and Investment team. 

You will report to the Director of Trade and Investment (NZ) and be part of a small and friendly team and will be comfortable leading on work with limited supervision.  

The jobholder may be required to operate outside of their role should there be a crisis affecting the UK and NZ, such as a natural disaster, which requires the British High Commission to suspend some or all of usual business.

Roles and responsibilities/what will the jobholder be expected to achieve:

This role will primarily work to support the activities of the Trade and Investment team in New Zealand.  You will also collaborate with colleagues who form part of a ANZ network based in Wellington, Perth, Melbourne, Canberra, Sydney and Brisbane. You will also work regularly with UK-based colleagues. Your ability to work at pace in a complex stakeholder environment will be key to your success.

The ability to build and establish strong relationships within the NZ business community, and other industry multipliers, to actively support and leverage the UK DIT’s outcomes will be viewed favourably. 

Key activities:

  • Office support - You will provide administrative and adhoc coordination support to the Director of Trade and Investment Director and their team as needed. (35%)
  • Project & Event Delivery - You will support the Trade and Investment Team’s business engagment activities including event organisation and logistics. The role will also require attendance and support at events, so some flexibility for working out of hours may be required. (25%)
  • Marketing & Communications - You will work with marketing specialists to help develop, deliver and coordinate  sophisticated and modern marketing and communications support for the Trade and Investment team. This includes working on social media campaigns, writing case studies and evaluating and reporting on the effectiveness of the team’s  communications efforts. (25%)
  • Visits - You will organise, coordinate and contribute to programmes for the team’s Trade and Investment related business and visits by Ministers and senior officials. (15%)


The role will include an element of travel to visit key stakeholder as well as for learning and development.

Essential on Arrival:

  • Bachelors degree (or equivalent) in an appropriate field
  • Ability to develop and maintain networks with senior decision makers
  • Strong interpersonal, networking, presentation and communication skills
  • Good knowledge of the New Zealand business environment
  • Ability to deliver to ambitious targets and outcomes
  • Strong research and analytical skills
  • IT literate including competency and experience with Microsoft Teams
  • Proactive and enthusiastic with a self-starter mind-set
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a team
  • High level organisational skills and ability to work at pace under pressure to achieve results

Desirable:

  • A minimum of two years’ work experience in business, ideally in an international & B2B context, or in business development
  • Some knowledge of the UK’s business environment, and some regional centres of the UK
  • Some knowledge of the processes involved in overseas company expansions (foreign direct investment and international trade (exports))
  • Experience with research intelligence tools, such as IBISWorld and customer relations management systems
  • Strong research and analytical skills with capacity to collate and synthesis information from a wide variety of sources and tailor information to diverse audiences
  • Some knowledge of the UK’s business environment, and some regional centres of the UK
  • Some knowledge of the processes involved in overseas company expansions (foreign direct  investment)
  • Some knowledge of investment decision processes.

Appointment is subject to a 90 day trial period pursuant to section 67A of the Employment Relations Act 2000, and gaining and maintaining Posts security clearance requirements.  

Open to New Zealand citizens, permanent residents, and partners/dependents of UK-based diplomatic staff currently posted in New Zealand. Employment offers are subject to successful clearance of pre-employment checks. No accommodation or relocation expenses are payable in connection with this position.
