Corporate Services Support, Driver / Messenger

Main purpose of job:

To provide transport services for British Embassy Bamako staff and visitors to and from assigned destinations. To effectively manage and maintain officially owned British Embassy vehicles.

Roles and responsibilities: 

Transport Services – 80%

  • Transport staff and visitors to and from assigned destinations within Bamako
  • Airport collection and drop off of staff and visitors
  • Distributing letters and invitations; carrying out errands and undertaking other administrative details as required on behalf of Embassy staff.

Vehicle Maintenance and Management – 15%

  • Keep accurate records of mileage and fuel consumption
  • Carry out daily inspections to ensure that all vehicles are road worth and in good working order using vehicle inspection checklist.  Promptly report any defects, faults or mishaps that occur to the Transport Manager
  • Ensure that the vehicle is clean and tidy
  • Ensure that vehicles are parked in a secured area
  • Communicate clearly through the use of mobile phone and car or hand held radio set
  • Participate in bi-monthly radio checks. Report any radio faults to the Embassy Transport and Logistics Manager

Administrative Support – 5%

  • Assist with ad hoc admin duties, as required by the Transport Manager/Corporate Services Management
  • Full valid Malian driving licence which permits the holder to drive heavy vehicles
  • Minimum of 5 years previous driving experience
  • Previous experience of driving Armoured Vehicles
  • Able to demonstrate that they can drive both safely and efficiently
  • Excellent knowledge of the road network and traffic system in Bamako
  • Able to communicate in English  
  • Must be responsible
  • Must be very smartly presented
  • Ability to work under pressure
  • Must have a flexible approach to working hours as sometimes overtime is necessary
  • Experience of driving for other Embassies, UN or NGOs
  • Basic Computer knowledge

Working patterns:

  • Standard embassy working hours are from 8:00 a.m to 16:30 Monday to Thursday and 8:00 to 12:30 on Fridays but drivers are required to work outside of these hours in order to accommodate duties to cover evening functions, airport trips and other out-of-hours activity.
  • Drivers are paid for a 35.5-hour week including lunch break but may be required to work on a shift system to include evening and weekend working.  
  • Annual leave is 24 days in addition to 14 public holidays annually.
  • Overtime is payable.
  • The British Embassy will never request any payment or fees to apply for a position.
  • Employees recruited locally by the British Embassy in Bamako are subject to Terms and Conditions of Service according to local employment law in Mali.
