Main purpose of job

The successful candidate will lead on the economic analysis of Thailand for the UK and provide economic policy support on elements of our bilateral engagement and sustainable development programme portfolio.

The jobholder will sit in the British Embassy’s Prosperity team and will work closely with the Director for Economics and Sustainable Development, and interact regularly with a wide range of contacts in government and academia in Thailand to produce value-added reporting on economic developments in Thailand.

He/she will provide high quality reporting and analysis on economic, business environment and regulatory developments in Thailand, responding to requests for economic input from a wide range of stakeholders, to support the Prosperity team’s and wider Embassy objectives as well as the regional network on promoting economic reforms that encourage economic development and promote business environment in Thailand.


Roles and responsibilities

The British Embassy Bangkok’s Prosperity Team is an active team which seeks to deliver impactful bilateral partnerships with Thailand which reform the economic environment for the benefit of Thailand and – by extension – the UK. The team oversees ‘pure’ economic relations with Thailand, work on climate and environmental issues and an expanding portfolio of sustainable development programmes (currently covering economic reform, low carbon, future cities, health and science cooperation).


Main Duties

Full responsibilities in the role will be decided in conjunction with the Director for Economics and Sustainable Development once the jobholder starts, but will likely include:

  • Monitoring, analysing and reporting regularly on economic developments in Thailand; working closely with Political Section and informing UK government departments in London and British businesses operating in Thailand;
  • Providing economic briefing for senior members of the Embassy; contributing economic inputs to briefing pack for UK Government visitors; preparing note and/or presentation slides for senior members of the Embassy to deliver speech or brief UK businesses on economic developments in Thailand;
  • Contributing to (and on some occasions, leading) regional reports, and actively contribute to discussions on our economic priorities in the region; response to requests for information or views from officials in London;
  • Conducting research and providing support on elements of our bilateral engagement and sustainable development programme portfolio;
  • Providing analytical input into broader efforts to boost UK-Thailand trade and investment links, working closely with colleagues in the Prosperity and Department of International Trade teams in Bangkok;
  • Building and maintaining an extensive network of contacts in government, academia, and private sector to help inform economic reporting and promote UK policy objectives;
  • Providing support to the Director for Economics and Sustainable Development on wider economic engagement with Thailand, logistics and administrative assistance, when needed.

Essential on arrival

  • Degree in economics;
  • Experience in development, economic analysis and political-economy reporting;
  • Knowledge of Thai economy.
  • Excellent written and spoken English. Fluency in Thai.
  • Self-motivation and the ability to work under light supervision.

Desirable

  • Strong analytical and reporting/written communication skills;
  • A good understanding of Thailand economic, business and political environment, Thailand’s role in the regional context, and familiarity with the UK;
  • A network of contacts in government, think tanks, academia, and the private sector with a particular focus on financial sector and trade contacts;
  • Strong interpersonal and inter-cultural communication skills.

All staff are encouraged to share their skills and experience with colleagues, through informal training (‘lunch & learn’) or coaching/mentoring. All staff are eligible for 5 L&D days a year.

In crisis/emergency situations work as required to support the Embassy response (sometimes on a shift pattern working unsociable hours)


This job is suitable for flexible working patterns, subject to operational requirements, and is detailed in the Bangkok flexible working policy, (Embassy core hours are 1000-1600 Mon-Thurs and 1000-1300 Friday).
