The Department for Business and Trade (DBT) is recruiting an exciting and demanding role to support our work on market access, based at the British Embassy in Warsaw. DBT’s mission is to improve market access for businesses, champion free and fair trade and encourage trade and investment between the UK and Poland. This is critical to our economies, supporting jobs, driving economic growth, raising wages and improving living standard across the globe. The successful candidate will report to the Head of Trade Policy in Warsaw and work closely with DBT Europe’s Market Officers, the Market Access Centre and Trade Hub, and the trade and economic diplomacy teams in embassies. The role offers a combination of policy and analysis, business engagement and lobbying work and is a great opportunity for anyone wanting to develop a career in economic and trade policy. In the role you will support UK businesses to make the most of trade opportunities between the UK and Poland, underpinning and prioritising this work with high quality analysis. The role holder will be required to maintain a network of external contacts in the Polish business and policy community, as well as serving as the focal point for market access work in DBT Poland’s own network of staff. What will you be expected to achieve as Market Access Officer - Identify and tackle trade barriers, investigating potential solutions, and assembling the teams and contacts needed to proactively resolve them.
- Coordinate market access work across DBT Poland’s in-country staff, supporting the development of market access expertise across all embassy teams.
- Work with UK Government colleagues in London and across Europe to develop local and regional plans to improve market access. Work closely with the Market Access Centre, Market Access Officers and economic teams to build knowledge about trade rules across the EU to contribute to developing regional advice.
- Monitor and report on developments in country, scan for potential barriers to trade (e.g. through proposed or new legislation or procedures), and assess impact on UK business interests. Understand and interpret complex detail from EU and national laws and procedures, be a good communicator to explain these to businesses as well as to other colleagues, and enjoy working closely and collaboratively with a wider range of stakeholders in country teams, regionally and with London.
- Build a network of internal and external stakeholders including within the business community and Polish Government to support your barrier identification and resolution work. Contribute to broader investigations on proposed EU legislation impacting UK trade to Poland.
- Support British Embassy Warsaw team on market access work as required, including commercial dialogues, Ministerial visits, business outreach and engagement, as necessary, ensuring a coordinated approach across HM Government. Escalate these to Country Director, Europe’s Market Access Director, His Majesty’s Trade Commissioner to Europe and His Majesty’s Ambassador to Poland to include these in local and regional strategic and country plans, and work together to resolve systematic barriers to trade.
