The British Embassy in Vienna is part of a world-wide network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas and is now looking for an Investment Adviser to join its Department for International Trade (DIT) team.

Main purpose of the role is to promote the UK as the destination of choice for investment, thereby maximising FDI from Austria to the United Kingdom. This is to be achieved through active market screening, collaboration and consultation with Austrian companies, sourcing and developing leads from new and potential investors as well as engaging with existing Austrian investors in the UK.

The Department for International Trade (DIT) promotes British trade and investment around the world; helps to build interest in British goods and services globally; and works to encourage foreign investment into the UK. DIT also brings together policy, promotion and financial expertise to break down barriers to trade & investment and to help businesses to succeed. Roles and responsibilities:


  • Maximise direct investment from Austria to the UK through active collaboration and consultation with Austrian companies on opportunities for new and increased investment business in the UK market.
  • Develop new and maintain existing business relationships with Austrian companies to attract high value foreign direct investment, contributing to knowledge-intensive economic activity in the UK and numbers of jobs increased/retained.
  • Collaborate with Austrian companies to promote R&D partnerships with UK firms and university departments.
  • Raise profile and awareness of UK and DIT offer in Austria and in the UK, developing and promoting the reputation of the UK as the international business partner of choice and as an attractive investment location, through organisation of seminars, workshops, inward and outward missions, participation at selected trade fairs and exhibitions as well as digital marketing channels.
  • Maintain and develop investment team data management incl. internal CRM, pipeline and campaign dashboards.
  • Support DIT team with briefings and information for high level visitors, events and meetings related to investment activities in Austria.

Fluency in German and English (both oral and written, minimum C1 level*);

Experience of business development and key account management, ideally in an international context;

Great IT skills including capabilities in digital marketing, digital project management, Word, PowerPoint and Excel, CRM-Systems and databases.

Good project management, including an eye for detail, to ensure that all aspects of service delivery are thought through carefully.




Formal qualifications in business/economics/finance/marketing combined with relevant work experience.

Customer focus: a concern for quality and drive for continuous improvement in the service provided.

Excellent communication skills to work well with commercial clients, external contacts and a wide and diverse Europe team.

Drive and enthusiasm combined with the ability to deliver, working as part of a team.

Resourcefulness and ability to act on own initiative, with an ability to find creative solutions when the unexpected occurs.

This is a local staff position in the British Embassy Vienna; it is not a diplomatic designated position. The position is subject to the terms and conditions of British Embassy employees.

This is a full-time fixed-term contract for period of 24 months, 5 days per week. Working hours are flexible and staff are entitled to time-off-in-lieu for extra hours worked. The annual leave entitlement is 25 days per year pro rata and the Embassy also enjoys 14 Austrian / UK public holidays per year and we are committed to ensuring a work / life balance.

The successful candidate will be subject to confirmation of a background check and security clearance. It is the applicant’s responsibility to ensure they are legally able to work in Austria. The Embassy is not able to assist with any visa or sponsorship arrangements.

The monthly salary will be € 3,162 gross, payable 14 times a year. Please note that UK nationals will receive their salary net, minus the deduction of an equivalent level of Austrian (UK) tax retained at source. Further information on this will be given to candidates during the recruitment process. All other nationals will receive paid their salary minus social insurance deductions and are expected to comply with Austrian tax obligations through completion of a tax return to the Austrian authorities.

Staff recruited locally by the British Embassy are subject to terms and conditions service according to Austrian employment law.

Visa / Passport requirements: Candidates must currently hold the independent right to live and work in Austria and be prepared to ensure that right remains throughout the scope of the contract. Additional requirements may become necessary after 31st December 2020.
