Main purpose of job

A great opportunity for a talented individual to work and learn at the heart of international politics and cooperation for development in a large foreign Embassy in Mexico.  This job will be to support the Political Team in the Embassy covering Anti-Corruption, Rule of Law and Digitalisation, to deliver the British Government’s overall objectives in Mexico.

What will the jobholder be expected to achieve?

Anti-Corruption, Transparency and Open Government (40 %)

Assist the Head of Anti-Corruption/Digitalisation Policy Unit in developing and follow up of local strategies on these issues.

Follow up London’s priorities in this area.

Legislative follow up and engagement.

Stakeholder engagement and communication strategy.

Support in organising and coordinating Embassy events.

Report of meetings and events.

Support the Business Environment Virtual Team.

Support delivery of Global Anti-Corruption Programme activities in Mexico, in line with commitments at the Global Anti-Corruption Summit 2016.

Digitalisation (40 %):

Provide relevant and timely policy updates for reporting domestically and to London.

Assist the Head of the Anti-Corruption and Digitalisation Policy Unit in developing and follow up of Exponential Technologies, Industry  4.0, Big Data/Open Data and Digital Economy Strategy of the Embassy to ensure they are in line with UK opportunities and priorities: 

  • Research of global strategies.
  • Follow up London’s priorities on this area.            
  • Follow up of local strategies on these issues, identifying UK opportunities.
  • Follow up of federal agencies strategies on these issues.
  • Legislative follow up and engagement.
  • Report of meetings.

Represent the Embassy in relevant digitalisation meetings.

Liaise with London on digitalisation strategies, including but not limited to the Prosperity Fund.

Contribute to increase and enhance our digitalisation stakeholders network.

Provide policy support to programme and Department for International Trade (DIT) teams.

Support the Future Cities Virtual Team.

Communications and Administrative support (20 %)

Ensure coordination of the Anti-Corruption/Competition/Digitalisation work across the Embassy.

Lead on policy communications (Anti-Corruption/Digitalisation) and work with the Political and Communications team, and also the Programme team for joint communication of impacts.

Liaise with external stakeholders to implement policy communication strategies (including but not limited to digital economy and anti-corruption).

Provide administrative and logistic support to Policy Teams (Anti-Corruption, Rule of Law, Digitalisation & Competition).  Act as office manager, coordinating stationery and other logistic requirements.

The Bigger Picture

UK interests in Mexico are wide-ranging and cover a large range of topics.  From developing political dialogue, a growing defence relationship, co-operation on international development, ambitious trade and economic policies, to a rich cultural exchange (there is a large British Council presence) and an important consular responsibility.  Our rapidly growing Prosperity Fund in Mexico is driving the deepening and broadening of an already very positive relationship.  

Essential on arrival:

  • At least Bachelor's degree level in Political Science, International Relations, Economics, Public Administration, Development or related field.
  • Have a good understanding and interest in key national and international policy issues and diplomacy.
  • Have excellent communication skills relating to relationship building both internally and externally to the British Embassy.
  • Have an understanding of Global Issues relating to Anti-Corruption, Open Government, Exponential Technologies, Accountability, Transparency/Competition.
  • Should be a proactive and creative self-starter with strong interpersonal skills who has the ability to learn quickly. 
  • Must be willing to work in constantly changing multicultural environments.
  • Fluent in Spanish and English (written and spoken).

Desirable:  

  • Experience in managing budgets and communication strategies.
