Main purpose of job:

The Job Holder will contribute to the policy work of the Political Team and serve as an important contact point for external stakeholders. They will work closely with the wider Embassy, as well as with the Korean Government, Parliamentarians and civil society to deliver UK objectives. The successful applicant will also provide organisational and logistical support to both the Political Team and to the Executive Assistant to the Ambassador.

Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?:

Political Officer

  • Carry out research for members of the Political Team and report back in a clear, appropriate format. Provide input to policy discussions and support the Team’s political lobbying. Contribute to planning and implementation of effective political engagement strategies.
  • Be responsible for maintaining and updating efficient contact databases, political lists and organograms to support the Political Team’s relationship management. Look for opportunities to widen the Team’s contact base in support of UK objectives.
  • Provide support for UK projects, including helping to drive and maintain attendance at a programme called English for the Future (EFF), which provides English language support to North Korean defectors.
  • Assist delivery of high-impact visit programmes by providing logistics and protocol arrangements for UK visitors including Ministers.
  • Provide administrative and logistical support to the Political Team day to day and in organising events throughout the year.  

Protocol Officer

  • Provide daily assistance to Executive Assistant to the Ambassador in translating invitations and other information as necessary.
  • Assist Executive Assistant in organising Ambassador hosted events at the Residence and elsewhere, in particular the annual Queen’s Birthday Party.
  • Cover as Personal Assistant to Deputy Head of Mission during his/her absence.
  • There will also be the opportunity to contribute to various other corporate initiatives in support of the wider Embassy’s work.
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience of working in an office-based environment;
  • Project management skills;
  • Excellent organisational skills and the ability to multi-task;
  • A self-starter, able to work independently with limited supervision;
  • Proficiency in English and Korean;
  • Ability to engage with senior colleagues and high level external stakeholders with credibility;
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office.
  • Previous experience of working in an Embassy or within the office of a major international organisation.

The British Embassy in Seoul offers a full range of L&D opportunities, including learning sets, e-learning and face-to-face classes.  Online courses and on the job learning will form the core of the jobholder’s induction into embassy work and these may be enhanced by an additional induction course in the UK.   Every member of staff is entitled to 5 L&D days per year.

Normal working hours are Monday to Friday, 09:00 – 17:15 (17:00 on Fridays). While some evening work and travel overseas (which might include weekends) and within Korea is required, we promote family-friendly flexible working opportunities, where operational and security needs allow.
