Main purpose of job:

UK Defence and Security Exports is part of the Department for International Trade. It supports the UK’s defence and security industry to export, fosters industrial partnerships and encourages investment in the UK.

The UK Defence and Security Exports team in Australia is responsible for the Australian and New Zealand markets, and covers the specialist defence, cyber security, civil security and policing, and aerospace markets.

The role holder will be responsible for the defence (but not high value campaigns) and aerospace markets. They will proactively identify export and investment opportunities, and support UK companies to commercial success.

They will also be responsible for fostering defence industrial partnerships, and developing a shared industrial base and innovation eco-system between the UK and the Australian and New Zealand markets.

The role holder will be able to demonstrate strong interpersonal skills. They will be able to proactively build trusted and impactful relationships with multiple stakeholders across government and within industry. They will be a confident communicator capable of exercising judgement and discretion with commercial in confidence data.

They will have commercial acumen, and will be able to quickly understand which opportunities offer value to UK companies, and will be confident using data to quickly and effectively prioritise their work.

They will be an effective team member, with a strong sense of collaboration and ability to bring diverse groups together. They will also be able to operate autonomously and will have a strong degree of ownership of their sector.

Previous experience of trade or defence capability or investment is preferable, but not necessary.

Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?

  • Identify and build the team’s insight into defence and aerospace export and investment opportunities in Australia and New Zealand.
  • Build trusted and impactful cross-Government, industry, trade body and broader eco-system networks across the UK, Australia and New Zealand that support the HM Government’s trade objectives.
  • Provide tailored advice to UK companies on exporting and industrial partnering, and to Australian and New Zealand companies on investing in the UK.
  • Support the delivery of events, trade missions and senior visits. Including the Avalon airshow, Land Forces trade show, and Indo-Pacific trade show, plus large set piece cross Government events.
  • Collaborate across the mission to deliver business objectives.

Resources managed (staff and expenditure):

Management of a small trade budget support and events budget. 

Essential on arrival:

  • Self Starter – must be able to work at a high level of intensity on own initiative using judgement, strong problem solving skills, and displaying resilience.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills – ability to work closely with team leaders and help senior management drive accountability, deal with any difficult situations with tact and diplomacy and a high degree of confidentiality when required to achieve desired outcomes.
  • Ability to work under pressure to meet deadlines.
  • Must be confident in dealing with business, senior figures, Ministers and VVIPs and their offices.
  • Commercial experience.
  • Defence industry or capability experience.

This position is being advertised as a 8 months fixed-term position, and will be extended subject to performance and availability of funding. 

Salary is at $62,191 per annum for 0.8 FTE (based on 1.0 FTE salary of $77,739) + 11% superannuation and annual leave loading.

Appointment is subject to an AFP records check and UK security clearance.

Working patterns:

This job is available to applicants for 4 days a week (0.8 FTE).  This is to encourage applicants who would prefer a part time arrangement.

There will be a requirement for domestic and international travel as appropriate. Due to time differences and the nature of the role there will be some calls and work outside of core office hours.

The British High Commission supports flexible and remote working for all its employees. A flexible working culture is encouraged by senior leadership however please note, remote working may not be suitable for all roles or business areas. Any flexible and / or remote working arrangement should be agreed with the employee’s line manager.
