Main purpose of job:

To run the official residence of the British High Commissioner to Sri Lanka in Colombo to a high standard, working closely with the High Commissioner and the High Commission team members.

To lead, manage and oversee the work of the permanent household team of 5.  To act as the principal interface with and manage external contractors and contracted staff.  To oversee, manage and deliver events at the residence by working with other teams across the High Commission and on occasion with external users.  To be responsible for residence income and expenditure. 

The residence team’s duties include: supporting all official entertainment; all meal and other catering planning, preparation, cooking and service; cleaning and laundry; preparing for and looking after guests; stock controls; and other administration tasks.

Roles and responsibilities:

Staff management (30%)

  • Lead, oversee and direct the household team to meet operational objectives.
  • Manage and support team members, oversee their personal development and ensure a high standard of performance.
  • Be the principal interface with and manage external contractors and contracted staff.

Operational and Events Management (50%) 

Lead and take responsibility for:

  • The efficient operation of the residence and its presentation to a high standard.
  • Overseeing the maintenance of the house and the garden.
  • Close and effective coordination with users and supporting estates, security and corporate services teams in the High Commission and external contractors and partners.
  • Preparation for and delivery of all events in the house (meals, receptions and meetings).

Financial and Resource Management (20%) 

  • Manage residence income and expenditure. 
  • Plan, profile and track residence expenditure.
  • Be responsible for stock controls and maintenance, and accurate inventory management.

Resources managed (staff and expenditure):

6 members of staff; residence finances and stocks.

Other skills / experience / qualifications:

Essential on arrival:  Proven staff management and delivering through a team

Proven IT skills – Word, Outlook (email) and Excel.

Working visa, if not a Sri Lankan.

Languages- English essential; proficient Sinhala and Tamil an advantage.

Prior experience in catering / hospitality industries

Monthly Salary: 101,642 LKR + 15% (EPF/ETF) per month.

For British High Commission (BHC) candidates, the Local Staff BHC Terms & Conditions will apply. 

For other than BHC candidates, starting salary will be Rs 101642/- + 15% (EPF)+ 3%(ETF) per month.  Salary will be commensurate with the successful candidate’s experience and qualifications.  Other benefits include 13 month’s salary and medical insurance coverage.
