Main purpose of job:

The British Embassy in Bamako is part of a worldwide network representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas. The British Embassy is fairly new – established in 2015 – but expanding and with a strong aid portfolio. Our aim is for the UK to become an energetic presence in the region, working together with the EU, UN and other partners to help support Mali’s development and security. The Political Officer role will help increase our understanding of the Malian political system and key political issues such as the Peace Process as well as Human Rights and stabilisation challenges. Increasing awareness of the UK’s support to Mali and the Sahel is also part of the role. 

Roles and responsibilities:


  • Tracking and providing high quality analysis of international and domestic policy, political and security issues and their implications for UK interests, independently and in coordination with British colleagues;
  • Building a network of contacts across the Malian Government, think tanks, academic and business communities to gather information and to lobby on behalf of the UK;
  • Co-ordinating policy with Mali on international issues and lobbying on key priorities for the UK;
  • Seeking opportunities for and maximising cooperation between the UK and Mali;
  • Arranging and supporting visits and meetings for the Ambassador, UK Ministers, senior officials and Parliamentarians.
  • Other tasks as required.
  • Fluent English and French with knowledge of other local languages an asset.
  • An excellent understanding of Malian politics and its international priorities
  • Experience of working in analytical role
  • A flexible attitude and ability to switch easily between dossiers
  • Proven ability to prioritise, handle multiple tasks and respond quickly to changing circumstances
  • Competent IT Skills including familiarity with Microsoft Office applications e.g. Word, Excel, Powerpoint.
  • Knowledge of the UK and understanding of its international priorities.
  • Experience of working in a governmental or international environment.
  • MA in international Relations.
