Main purpose of job:

The British Consulate-General in Atlanta has an exciting opportunity for a dynamic and detail-oriented person to join our busy Consular Team as the Pro Consul.  Reporting to the Vice Consul in Atlanta, but with occasional travel across the region, the successful applicant will play a key role in front-line service delivery, stakeholder management and prevention activities, as well as making an effective contribution to the wider Consular regional team. 

The main purpose of the role is to provide consular assistance to British nationals in accordance with current guidelines, within the geographical area of the Southeast USA – consisting of six US States. Primarily responsible for Emergency Travel Documents and front line customer support. This may include speaking with/visiting British nationals in jail/hospital, providing advice and assistance to homeless persons, those suffering from mental health issues, providing support to family members following bereavement, child abductions or custody matters, providing advice and assistance to victims of crime including rape or sexual assault victims

The ideal candidate will be an active member of the Americas Consular Network requiring the person to be a team player, an effective communicator both written and oral, exceptional attention to detail, sound judgement and common sense, ability to remain calm under pressure and to be able to quickly shift focus between case types. 

Roles and responsibilities:

  • Providing consular assistance in accordance with current policies.
  • Keeping the Vice Consul informed of developments in cases.
  • Printing & handing over of emergency travel document applications.
  • Maintenance of electronic case files.
  • Maintaining close links with local authorities including, but not limited to law enforcement, correctional facilities, medical examiners, hospitals, morgues, mental health facilities and airlines.
  • Contribute to the wider work of crisis preparedness and response.
  • Any other duties as assigned including exceptionally participate in call-out arrangements for emergency cases out of hours.

Essential on arrival:

  • 3+ years of relevant work experience including working with the public.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral, including the ability to communicate at all levels.
  • Ability to handle personal issues/information and deal with staff and clients in a friendly, non-judgemental and sensitive manner
  • Ability to prioritise, effectively manage and execute multiple tasks.
  • Proficiency in the Microsoft office suite is required.
  • A valid driving license and willingness to drive (with expenses reimbursed).

Language requirements:

Language: English

Level of language required: Fluent with excellent written English.

Working patterns:

Requires standard working pattern of 8.30am to 5pm Monday through Friday. This role is 40 hours per week with exceptionally working longer if required. We offer hybrid work as a flexible approach to support a variety of different work schedules.
