The British Embassy, Kuwait has a vacancy for the post of a Locally Engaged Pro Consul.


Purpose of the job:

The successful candidate who fills this position will have the ability to deliver a professional and efficient Consular service to British Nationals in Kuwait. The main purpose of the role is to ensure that distressed British Nationals receive a professional high quality service and advice provided is accurate, timely, consistent offered in a sensitive manner and in line with FCO guidance. This will include building up and maintaining contacts with local authorities and in the community. To provide notarial and documentary services, ensuring that all services and information provided is consistent, accurate and in accordance with FCO guidelines.

To take part in our communications effort, the successful candidate will work independently with minimal supervision, making operational judgements in consultation with local senior officers and Consular Directorate.


Duties and responsibilities:

Assistance

• Provide accurate advice and assistance to Distressed British Nationals (DBNs) and their families via face to face (pre-arranged meetings/walk-ins), the telephone or email on a range of issues including arrests, hospitalisations, missing persons, mental health, debt and employment issues, in a sensitive manner;
• To maintain accurate and concise Casebook records; and
• Possible out of hours requirement in emergencies.

Counter and Notarial Services

• Administering the CABS appointment system;
• Providing a range of counter services including notarial work;
• Cashing up and other financial requirements;
• Customer Correspondence

Communications and Stakeholder Engagement

• Take an active role in the prevention and communication work of the consular team including planning campaigns, producing materials and attending events;
• Actively seek out and manage partnerships with local authorities and the wider community

General

• Carry out other reasonable ad-hoc duties in support of the Consular function.
• To take part in the Embassy emergency planning and any response to a Crisis affecting UK citizens.

Essential:
• Fluent written and spoken English and Arabic;
• Minimum two years of work experience in a similar field.
• A degree level education in a relevant field.
• Computer literacy in all Microsoft Office Packages and accurate typing skills;
• A team player who is capable of working on their initiative and who is adaptable to changing priorities. Must be able to work and act without close supervision;
• Excellent customer care skills and the ability to respond to a range of customers needs;
• Good interpersonal skills;
• Travel within the Gulf region (and possibly further afield) maybe required for training and logistical purposes; and
• Consular work can sometimes be stressful and of a sensitive nature. The successful applicant will therefore be expected to maintain absolute consular confidentiality and impartiality.

Working Conditions and Remuneration:

The position is full-time, at 38 hours a week with considerations of flexibility depending on circumstances. The successful candidate will be expected to start work as soon as possible depending on the outcome of the security clearance.

Pay is on the Embassy A2 (L) scale, at KD 654 per month depending on candidate’s skills and experience. The package also includes a good level of health insurance and an engaging working environment.

We offer opportunities to develop professional skills through our Learning & Development offer. Leave entitlement is 30 days (pro-rated) plus 14 public holidays.
