The British Government has funded a CPS Criminal Justice Advisor (CJA) to work regionally between Greece, Bulgaria and Serbia - to develop criminal justice collaboration to tackle organised immigration crime throughout Europe. The aims of the CJA post are to initiate and support criminal investigations, dismantle organised crime networks, support the prosecution of offenders and pursue the proceeds of crime. The CJA post is based in Athens but involves frequent travel throughout Greece, Bulgaria and Serbia.

The advertised position, based in the British Embassy in Sofia, is to provide high level support to the CJA, to engage with stakeholders in the criminal justice system in Bulgaria and to provide assistance to the CJA with ongoing organised crime operations throughout Europe.

There will be a degree of autonomy in the role with an expectation to review, analyse and progress administrative work streams, identify improvements to process and take forward implementation on behalf of the CJA.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Provide high level support in Bulgaria to the Athens-based Criminal Justice Adviser (CJA).

  • Engage with stakeholders in the criminal justice system in Bulgaria, to provide assistance to the CJA with ongoing organised crime operations throughout Europe.

  • Support to wider Human Trafficking and Modern Slavery work in British Embassy Sofia.

  • External liaison. Building and maintaining close working relationships with UK and Bulgarian law enforcement and criminal justice partners.

  • Maintaining confidentiality in all areas of work.

  • Translation and linguistic support (Translating local laws, procedures, requests for meetings, documents, providing linguistic support in meetings with local stakeholders).

  • Effective management of resources and accountability to the budget holder for expenditure incurred.

  • Management of the CJA diary, organising meetings and conferences, travel and accommodation booking, preparing and distributing agendas, briefing papers and minutes.

  • Management of the office in the absence of the CJA, handling enquiries and referring CJA casework onwards as appropriate.

  • Researching legal and non-legal topics as required and presenting the findings logically and coherently.

  • Provision of administrative support and preparation of monthly/quarterly reports and updates

  • Management of UK mutual legal assistance (MLA) and extradition requests including initial triage.

  • Delivering project work to enhance bilateral cooperation and progress UK priorities.

  • Manage the necessary event planning duties, including travel arrangement and logistics.

 


  • Legal or law enforcement experience.

  • Excellent command of spoken and written English and Bulgarian.

  • Strong understanding of the Bulgarian criminal justice environment.

  • Ability to establish and maintain relationships with key figures in the Bulgarian criminal system.

  • A self-starter, able to work independently when required.

  • Strong problem solving and judgement skills to deliver results within set deadline with good attention to detail.

  • Good IT skills including MS office.

This is a full-time position (36 hours per week) for a temporary appointment of 18 months.

Monthly salary for this position is BGN 2427.56 gross, payable 13 times a year.

The successful candidate will be subject to confirmation of a background and security clearance. Anyone with right of residence and employment in Bulgaria may apply, including all EU / EEA citizens and the family members of EU / EEA nationals exercising a treaty right in Bulgaria.
