The British Embassy in Yangon is seeking an individual for the position of Communications Manager.

MAIN PURPOSE OF THE JOB

This is an exciting opportunity for a digital communications expert to work within the British Embassy Yangon press and communications team. You will be managing the embassy’s social media presence, as well as running multi-channel strategic communications campaigns. You will also help to promote and administer the UK’s Chevening scholarship programme in Myanmar.

You will have the opportunity to develop wider public diplomacy and communications skills and make a wide range of contacts in the diplomatic and international development fields.

You will plan and create engaging digital/social media content (30%):

  • Creating engaging digital content including multimedia and videos.
  • Tailor messaging and approach for social media, adapting content to different audiences.
  • Identifying and working with key influencers on social media to amplify messaging.

You will develop and implement multi-channel strategic communications campaigns (30%):

  • Lead on designing, developing and implementing impact-driven, innovative communications strategies and integrated cross-channel plans.
  • Maintain relationships with embassy and wider FCDO stakeholders to understand key priorities and major activities on the horizon. Proactively engage with the appropriate teams on their communications priorities.
  • Communications planning and developing a strategic approach for key activities, such as announcements, visits and events.
  • Use audience insight to guide activity and ensure communications are as relevant, meaningful and effective as possible.
  • Evaluate activity to assess performance in delivering on objectives and to inform future activity.

You will promote applications from Myanmar for the Chevening scholarship programme (20%):

  • Design and deliver a marketing plan to raise awareness of the scholarships and encourage applications
  • Run online and in-person information and alumni events.
  • Work with the Chevening Alumni Association to ensure alumni remain engaged with the embassy and the wider Chevening network.

You will provide proactive and reactive handling of Myanmar-language media (15%):

  • Work with journalists and key opinion leaders to identify possible opportunities for landing UK government messaging.
  • Developing materials for press, such as press notices and briefing packs as well as arranging opportunities for press to engage with UK officials – such as media interviews and press conferences.
  • Reactive media handling – monitoring coverage on relevant topics and managing media enquiries.
  • Creating and maintaining media contacts, including key opinion leaders and influencers. 

You will also contribute to internal communications to engage staff and support organisational change (5%):

  • Advising on channels and format for all-staff communications.
  • Drafting and translating messages for the Ambassador and the embassy’s senior management team.
  • Working with corporate staff committees to help drive and measure staff engagement.

  • Experience of social media content production, including graphic design and video editing
  • Experience designing and implementing communications campaigns
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Language: Burmese & English
  • Level of language required: Fluent in both
  • Knowledge of communications planning models such as the UK Government Communications Service OASIS model
  • Experience of communications evaluation
  • Experience working with the media
  • Experience working with an international organisation or embassy

The British Embassy Yangon offers a competitive remuneration package, including salary, benefits, leave entitlement of 22 days per annum (calculated in pro rata).
