Main purpose of job:


To support the UK Government in Brazil’s policy work focused on Brazilian domestic politics at local, state and federal levels, and to help deliver high-level visits and events.


 Roles and responsibilities:


 

The British Consulate-General in Rio de Janeiro invites applications to join the Political Team in Brazil. This is an exciting position within the Domestic Politics team and will give the successful candidate opportunities to work on the United Kingdom and Brazil bilateral relationship.


You will advise diplomats and senior managers, develop a wide range of external contacts, and be fully involved in the diplomatic life of a Mission. The main working language of the Consulate-General is English, so you should be able to write reports and briefings in both English and Portuguese.

   

  • Develop a wide range of contacts amongst officials and insitutions in Rio State and Rio City.
  • Advise Consul-General, Deputy Consul-General, trade and prosperity in the British Consulate-General in Rio de Janeiro on local, state and federal-level politics

  • Brief and where relevant accompany the Consul General and other government officials on calls with politicians and senior Brazilian officials.

  • Support the wider Political Team in Brasilia, São Paulo, and more broadly the Brazil Network in identifying and reporting on political trends, providing research and analysis when necessary.

  • Policy monitoring, including writing briefs on local government/stakeholders and monitoring local political news

  • Provide support for projects and events. Responsibilities include arranging meetings, booking venues, setting up events (branding, catering, etc.), coordinating mailing lists, sending and following up on invitations, etc.

  • Assist in the organisation of visits of UK Ministers and senior officials to Brazil, including arranging logistics around accommodation, transport, protocol, and support on briefing packs and meetings.

  • Line manage one member of staff (political intern).



    The successful candidate will be self-motivated, pro-active and enthusiastic with excellent interpersonal skills in both English and Portuguese. Applicants must also have excellent computer skills, particularly MS Outlook and MS Office packages.


     


    This is a stretching and rewarding position in the British Consulate-General in Rio de Janeiro.


    Candidates should have qualifications or experience equivalent to degree level. Previous experience of working with domestic politics and institutional and international affairs is an asset. You should have experience of analysis,reporting, stakeholder engagement,, and have ideally already delivered successful visits and events. You should have excellent organisation and communication skills, and be able to deal with multiple tasks and priorities.


    The political team works across the UK government Brazil network, with the majority of the teambased in Brasilia, and a small number of collagues in Sao Paulo, so you will have to be a self-starter and able to work autonomously. You’ll work at the heart of the friendly and supportive Consulate in Rio de Janeiro, and will work closely with colleagues in the trade, prosperity, defence and consular teams there and help them to build the political relationships they need to deliver their objectives. Regular liaison with local contacts and communication with the UK require an excellent command of written and spoken English and Portuguese.
