NATO is the world’s most successful military alliance, and has been at the heart of the United Kingdom’s defence and security for 70 years. The United Kingdom’s Joint Delegation to NATO (UKDEL) is the link between the UK Government and the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation. Its principal roles are to promote British interests in NATO and to keep UK Ministers and Government Departments informed about NATO discussions. Its work is valued highly by FCO and MOD Ministers alike.

We are looking for a Policy Officer to join the UK Delegation. The job holder will become part of a Delegation working on the largest range of challenges that NATO has faced since the end of the Cold War, facing threats from state and non-state actors whilst adapting to modern forms of conflict. The job holder will focus on developing NATO’s response to hybrid threats, building resilience across the Alliance, and improving cooperation between NATO and the EU.

The officer’s duties will include leading negotiations on the use of civil resources in support of NATO's objectives; providing analysis to senior leadership on areas such as disinformation and EU-NATO cooperation; and developing policy on NATO’s adaption to new security threats. The successful candidate will have experience in policy analysis and development, and will have a track record of delivering substantive policy outcomes. In return, we will offer you the chance to join a motivated, professional team, and to make a mark on international policy in a fast-changing area of statecraft.

As with all jobs in the Delegation, we promote an adaptable and responsive approach, which means the job is likely to evolve over time to deal with changing circumstances and priorities. We can ensure that it will be fast moving and enjoyable, with plenty of scope for learning and development.

  • Negotiation – Representing the UK Delegation at the Civil Emergency Planning Committee, the top NATO advisory board for the use of civil resources in support of NATO's objectives. Representing the UK on other Committees, as necessary;
  • Policy formulation – Building networks within HMG, with Allies, with Institutions (EU and NATO), and with think tanks and Centres of Excellence. Developing policy that supports NATO’s adaption to new security threats; including national resilience, and disinformation;
  • Policy delivery – Working with NATO and EU staffs to deliver deeper cooperation on a range of EU and NATO areas, including crisis management, response to hybrid threats, and projecting security;
  • Corporate Activity -  Corporate activity to improve the Delegation’s effectiveness.
  • Fluent written and spoken English;
  • Strategic thinking, and the ability to come up with new, innovative ideas;
  • Previous experience in an international environment (at least 3 years preferably);
  • Experience in designing and delivering policy;
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills;
  • IT / digital skills (particularly MS Office, Outlook and Word).
  • Previous experience in International Relations, with a focus on international security;
  • Previous experience of Civ-Mil relations (E.g.: Knowledge of UK risk and crisis management, or building national resilience against hostile threats, would be desirable);
  • Previous experience/knowledge of NATO and/or UK Government institutions and procedures.
