Main purpose of job:

The advertised post is for an Investment Executive (IE) – Tech & Creative Industries, based out of the British Consulate-General in Atlanta. The IE will report to the Deputy Sector Head (Technology) in Atlanta, forming part of a smaller “super cluster” team within DIT Southeast focused on capitalising on the synergies that exist between the tech, creative and advanced engineering industries. The appointee will specifically seek to identify and attract foreign direct investment into the UK from new prospects i.e. high growth companies with no existing UK footprint.    

The successful candidate will engage with a diverse range of clients and stakeholders. S/he will be responsible for working with clients and delivering DIT initiatives across the Southeast US, with an emphasis on the key metro economies of Atlanta, Nashville, Tampa Bay, Orlando and South Florida. The successful candidate will also work in close collaboration with the Miami-based Trade & Investment Officer who account manages tech and creative strategic / existing investors across the region.

Roles and Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be expected to achieve the following:

  • Forge strong relationships with U.S. business leaders, trade associations, corporate innovation accelerators / incubators, VCs and other key partners within the tech and creative industries.
  • Provide comprehensive account management to U.S prospects looking to invest in the UK – primarily high-growth start-up and scale-ups, or small-mid cap companies with no UK presence. Build and manage a pipeline of high value, knowledge-driven projects.
  • Develop, position and implement marketing strategies, conceive and develop grassroot activities / events with the goals of generating FDI leads, building relationships, and highlighting the strengths of the UK’s market proposition to potential investors.
  • Manage and/or support visits by senior government officials and stakeholders by securing high-level meetings, organizing activities, and preparing briefing materials.
  • Maintain current knowledge of market trends, incentives, and centres of excellence in both the U.S. and the UK.
  • Work to support UK prosperity and economic growth, and UK trade policy objectives, in collaboration with other UK government agencies. Assist in showcasing the benefits of the UK/US economic relationship to external audiences.
  • Represent DIT and the British Consulate at external functions, including occasional speaking engagements.
  • Undertake frequent travel in the U.S. and occasional travel overseas (approximately 20% of the time).

Essential on arrival:

  • Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in a relevant field.
  • Minimum 5 years of relevant professional experience, either in international sales or business development, economic development and/or in the tech sector.
  • A demonstrable record of meeting challenging targets. Proactive, self-starting approach to work; ability to deliver effectively under limited day-to-day supervision in a deadline sensitive, fast-paced environment.
  • Proven ability to work effectively with companies and organizations at a senior level, with a record of fostering business relationships and a demonstrated ability to think strategically.
  • Familiarity with both the US and the UK business environments.
  • Strong client management and project management experience.
  • Excellent research and writing skills, with an ability to provide clear, concise summaries and to respond to ad hoc requests at short notice.
  • Strong networking skills.
  • Proficiency in standard Microsoft applications and CRM software.
  • Valid driver’s license and passport; the ability to attend official functions outside of office hours; and the ability to undertake domestic and international air travel, including overnight stays.

Desirable:

  • A Master’s degree (or equivalent) in a relevant field is desirable.
  • Sound knowledge of the UK’s investment proposition, especially with regard to incorporation, tax, employment, R&D, and skills relevant to the tech and creative industries.
