To develop and implement a sound administrative system to support the political, commercial and prosperity work of the High Commission. To support the commercial, political and public affairs teams and periodic ad-hoc support to the rest of the chancery team. To cover some aspects of the Executive Assistant and Social Secretary roles when they are on leave.

Roles and responsibilities:

  • Administrative and logistical support to political, human rights and rule of law activities and projects.
  • Assisting the team by answering routine telephone and email enquiries from the public and requesting information from team members when appropriate. 
  • Assisting the team with the recording of basic financial programme costs and updating colleagues during team meetings.
  • Support the team in delivering high impact projects by making telephone calls to external partners and UK agencies; attending occasional visits to off-site locations with one or more colleagues.
  • Working with team members to accurately record and update contacts database.

The Administrative Assistant will be responsible for providing the administrative support to all aspects of the political, commercial and residence teams. The jobholder will have strong communication skills. They will have an eye for detail, and will feel comfortable delivering effectively and efficiently at pace across a broad portfolio. They will feel comfortable working in a multi-disciplinary and diverse environment. Duties will include many that are of a routine nature and some that require a rapid change in direction. Full guidance, support and coaching given to the successful applicant.  As the role develops, there will be opportunities to attend and take notes of meetings and other engagements on behalf of the team.

  • Relevant experience in office management and providing administrative support to a team
  • Organised approach to the flow of paperwork in the office
  • Able to communicate by email, telephone and face to face
  • Fluent in spoken and written English
  • Excellent IT skills
  • Interest in the work of a diplomatic mission and how it relates to the global picture;
  • Professional/academic interest or background in political and/or human rights work;
  • Experience of project and/or simple budget management.

The jobholder will be exposed to a variety of areas of work and a range of personnel both inside and outside the High Commission. There will be a range of opportunities for personal and professional development, with access to specialist courses (mainly through e-learning at the desk).  More specialist training may become available.

The salary for this role is from B$1, 541 per month (negotiable based on qualifications and experience). The British High Commission offers a competitive remuneration package inclusive of salary, performance related pay, benefits and extensive Learning and Development opportunities. The successful candidate will work for an average of 35 hours per week. 

Employment offers are subject to successful clearance of pre-employment checks and local labour requirements. Staff who are locally recruited by the British High Commission are subject to Terms and Conditions of Service according to local employment law.

No accommodation or relocation expenses are payable in connection with this position.  Foreign Nationals, with assistance from the High Commission, must be able to obtain a permit to work in Brunei in order to apply.
