Driver / Messenger

Main purpose of job:

Driver: To take the UK High Commissioner to official engagements and deliver/collect official letters (50%)

Maintenance Assistant: To support the Office Manager (Corporate Services Officer) on estates management and carry out basic repairs to the High Commission and Residence (and Deputy High Commissioner’s property) where appropriate (45%)

Guard Coordinator: To support the Deputy High Commissioner and Office Manager on security by coordinating guards (5%)

Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?:

Driver (50%):

To drive the UK High Commissioner and the High Commission vehicles in a safe and economical manner in accordance with the Highway Code and local laws. Maintain up-to-date knowledge on local driving routes.

Use of the vehicles is for official purposes only.

Check and maintain the following in all High Commission vehicles:

  • Daily check of tyre pressures, hydraulic fluid, oil, radiator, battery level and fuel.
  • Keeping the vehicle clean and serviceable
  • Reporting any defects
  • Keeping an accurate record of all journeys and mileage.
  • Ensure a presentable appearance, including wearing any official uniform or abiding by dress-codes.
  • Making sure that all passengers are aware that they should wear their seat-belts and abide by the rules of the transport policy
  • Security of vehicles
  • Reporting to the DHC or Office Manager for any incidents or accidental damages to the official vehicles in your possession
  • Ensure vehicle servicing takes place at the manufacturer’s recommended intervals.

You are responsible for the timely delivery and collection of any messages/post as directed by the High Commissioner, Deputy High Commissioner (DHC) or Office Manager.

Maintenance Assistant (45%)

As the High Commission Maintenance Assistant you are expected to help maintain the Estate to a high level of safety and performance. Generally you will be directed to carry out tasks, however if you notice areas where maintenance is required, you are advised to inform the Office Manager without delay, particularly if it is connected with Health and Safety issues. You may be asked to:

  • Assist to perform safety checks and maintenance repairs on the properties
  • Carry out other duties as necessary and requested by the Office Manager or DHC

You are responsible for all maintenance tools, which are to be stored securely in the High Commission or Residence when not in use. You are to maintain a record of all such items held.

All tasks are to be carried out in accordance with current UK Health and Safety Guidelines; if you are not sure of your responsibilities you are to seek guidance from the DHC or the Office Manager.

You have a responsibility to report any work related accidents, ill health or near misses/dangerous occurrences incidents without delay to the DHC or Office Manager.

Guard Coordinator (5%)

As directed by the DHC and Regional Overseas Security Manager, co-ordinate rotas and security checks for the guards to the UK High Commission, Residence, and DHC property. Escalate issues as they arise.

  • Full, clean driving license.
  • Detailed driving knowledge of the host country.
  • Proven experience of carrying out light maintenance repairs to buildings and cars.
  • Fluent spoken and written English. Fluent spoken and written Samoan.
  • Experience of driving VIPs.
  • IT literate (MS Word, Excel)
  • Security experience.

The starting annual salary for this position is WST 20,365. 

There will be continual on-the-job learning and access to the UK’s online Diplomatic Academy training courses.

We will consider flexible working arrangements in line with the High Commission terms and conditions of service.

The target starting date for this position is around 28th October 2019, subject to successful clearance of pre-employment/security checks.
