The British Embassy in Ankara is part of a world-wide network representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas and is now looking to hire a (Temporary) Trade Assistant, for the Department for International Trade (DIT) team. This job is on a fixed short term contract basis till 31/03/2020.

DIT work to support companies based in the UK and their in-country representatives and partners overseas. Primarily the job involves providing support to the DIT team during their interactions with UK and Turkish industries and government. In particular the Ankara team focuses on supporting UK exports in the healthcare, life sciences, energy, education, infrastructure, defence & security sectors.

This support can be through monitoring relevant sector activity; identifying potential opportunities for UK businesses and registering these in the Export Opportunities system; arranging inward and outward high level visits, appointments and meetings; responding to requests for information and assistance and accompanying UK companies on their calls.

DIT work may require an occasional need for short periods of duty away from Ankara and some international travel.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  • To support the day to day work of the healthcare, life sciences, energy, infrastructure, defence & security and education sector teams within the Ankara DIT office;
  • Supporting the delivery of services to UK industry;
  • Supporting trade campaigns and assisting with reporting and briefing requirements of the section;
  • Helping to establish, maintain and expand a wide range of high-level contacts in the relevant sectors of industry in Turkey;
  • Working with those contacts and other sources of information to acquire knowledge of the key projects, opportunities and challenges for UK business;
  • Supporting and/or leading on planning and logistic arrangements for events and visits to Turkey and to the UK;
  • Liaising with UK companies and following up on enquiries, including through visits to local companies, supporting the production of chargeable reports for UK companies when commissioned;
  • To ensure that all administrative tasks, such as logging of data, appraisals and expenditure claims and reports are performed in a timely way.
  • Fluency in Turkish and English (both oral and written);
  • Some understanding of one or more of the commercial sectors, in particular Turkish healthcare, life sciences, renewable energy or education sectors and how these interact with government would be advantageous;
  • Experience of organising events and delegation visits, visit programme planning and logistics;
  • The ability to work in a diverse, multicultural team where pressure and short deadlines are common;
  • The ability to effectively support those representing UK interests in meetings with high level audiences.
  • Experience of campaigns, lobbying, public relations or similar roles in the public sector would be helpful;
  • Experience of working in an international environment either an embassy or multilateral organisation.

This is a full-time fixed-term contract, for 5 working days (36.25 hours net) per week, until 31 March 2020.

The monthly salary for this position is 1,447.61 USD gross A2 level. Please note that staff members are responsible for paying any income tax required by local law.

The successful candidate will be subject to professional background check, security clearance and a probation period of 2 months.
