The British Embassy in Ankara is part of a worldwide network representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas and is now looking for a Local Liaison Assistant to support the core business of the National Crime Agency (NCA) International Network.

The National Crime Agency (NCA) leads UK law enforcement's fight to cut serious and organised crime. The NCA has national and international reach and facilitates cooperation between UK and International Law Enforcement Agencies and partners. The NCA Team in Ankara is part of the International Liaison Officers Network.

The purpose of this role is to provide flexible support, linguistic skills and cultural advice to the NCA International Liaison Officer (ILO) network in Turkey. Success will be measured by assisting delivery on NCA priority threat areas, including drug trafficking, firearms trafficking, illicit financing, high-end money laundering, and child exploitation. The role will require building skills and knowledge on key areas, as well as facilitating excellent bilateral cooperation with partners in host law enforcement and judiciary. Sound strategic knowledge of the key threat areas will be expected to be developed.

The person recruited for this role will be responsible for carrying out a range of administrative and linguistic duties as well as a variety of other tasks detailed below.

Main duties and responsibilities:

  • Regular meetings with hosts throughout Turkey, particularly in Ankara;

  • Translate documents and provide interpretive support at meetings and other engagements;

  • Provide administrative support to International Liaison Officer as required. Maintain filing systems that is thorough, retrievable and auditable;

  • Supply logistical support for visiting officers, and assist with visits by Turkish Officers to the UK;

  • Make enquiries and exchange information with host law enforcement agencies in response to incoming information and on-going joint co-operation;

  • Liaise with partners across government within the British Embassy (Ankara), Consulate (Istanbul), general Mission staff and foreign law enforcement liaison officers;

  • Undertake extensive analysis, research and development on intelligence received from NCA and hosts on priority threat areas; develop in-depth strategic and tactical knowledge of these;

  • Develop in-depth knowledge of Turkish legislation surrounding the key threat areas;

  • Support Project Management and delivery;

  • Provide on call support (including out of hours) to NCA office and Turkey ILO network as required.

• Proficient level in both written and spoken English and Turkish language skills;

• Previous working experience in translation and interpretation of varied and technical documents from Turkish to English and vice versa;

• Excellent all-round communication skills to manage customer expectations and deliver difficult messages;

• Previous professional experience within an overseas mission, international projects or policing organisations;

• Ability to research and follow guidelines, and to plan and prioritise effectively;

• Ability to work under pressure, meet tight deadlines and find flexible innovative solutions;

• Flexibility to travel regularly and attend meetings in Turkey and Europe, often at short notice;

• Strong IT skills (Microsoft Office package) and ability to use quantitative and qualitative analysis of data;

• Ability to work well in a team and independently.

• Experience of managing staff with proven leadership skills;

• University degree or equivalent on a relevant subject.

This is a full-time and 6 months temporary contract (maternity cover) for 5 working days (36.25 hours net) per week.

The monthly salary for this position is 1,447.61 USD gross, A2 level, in addition to the responsibility allowance of 539.13 USD and the on-call allowance of 258.28 USD gross. Please note that staff members are responsible for paying any income tax required by local law.

The successful candidate will be subject to professional background check, security clearance and a probation period of 2 months.
