The British Embassy in Tunis currently has a vacancy for a Trade and Investment Adviser (Energy & Infrastructure Lead), Grade – B3 (L) to start as soon as possible.

Main purpose of job:

To help British companies win business in Tunisia, principally in Energy and Infrastructure Sectors to help deliver the Department for International Trade (DIT) Regional Trade Plan for Africa.

We are looking for a highly motivated and enthusiastic self-starter, with excellent commercial awareness, who can work accurately within deadlines and is a strong team member who works collaboratively.

Main duties and responsibilities:

• Deliver front line business facing work, growing UK exports to (and investment in) Tunisia. The primary focus will be on energy/infrastructure sectors, but this may change as commercial priorities evolve

• Planning and delivering targeted campaigns and activities in these sectors aimed at increasing the demand for UK goods and services in Tunisia

• Identifying and generating commercial opportunities, providing professional advice and high-quality market analysis to UK companies and facilitating introductions and providing the other support required for companies to win contracts

• With the rest of the DIT team, you will contribute to achieving business plan targets and for ensuing services are charged for, where applicable

• Assisting the pan African Trade Services Unit in providing high quality market research and organising visit programmes and events to introduce UK companies to the Tunisian market

• Promoting, where relevant, the financing products offered by UK Export Finance, the British government’s Export Credit Agency, to support companies win contracts

• Stakeholder engagement: Develop a strong network of contacts in the public and private sector in the sectors for which you are responsible and use this network to further UK business interests, including through arranging and attending meetings. Attend seminars, receptions and other events in Tunisia, the region and the UK, as required

• Report contact with UK companies and monitor/record follow up activity though DIT systems, working with the Director of DIT to ensure targets are met. Ensure all export opportunities in sectors the job holder is responsible for are captured and advertised to British businesses

• Support the work of the DIT team, including through ad-hoc translation and interpreting, maintaining trade statistics, assisting companies with visa enquiries, budget management, business planning finances and inputting management information. Lead on responses to DIT parliamentary questions, Ministerial correspondence and public enquiries.

• Liaison with other areas of UK government, including but not limited to the Economics, Defence, Projects, Political Teams in the Embassy and British Council. Provide advice and guidance on trade, investment and trade policy issues, ensuring delivery of opportunities and that commercial offers are complementary to our political and programme support

• Identify issues faced by British investors active in Tunisia in the sectors you are responsible for and develop and implement clear strategies to resolve them

• Contribute flexibly and fully to the work of the DIT Africa Team, and exporting successful campaign approaches to other relevant markets across Africa

We are looking for a proactive, quick learner who can prioritise efficiently, with minimal supervision, delivering to deadlines. S/he will need excellent teamwork, interpersonal and communications skills to build strong relations with stakeholders within both UK and Tunisian government and business bodies.  

Essential:

• Fluency in English both written and spoken

• Fluency in French and/or Arabic both written and spoken

• Graduate with a university degree in a relevant subject (e.g. business, economics, international relations, etc.)

• 3 years recent experience in the education and/or information technology sectors

• Experience in written policy advice, briefings/analysis

• Computer literate, working with Microsoft Windows and able to manage information effectively

• Excellent communication skills and experience of liaison with internal and external stakeholders, including at senior level

• Experience of working to tight deadlines and managing uncertainty and competing priorities to achieve objectives

• Excellent organisational skills

• Experience working with Tunisian and British stakeholders, preferably in an energy/infrastructure context

• Experience working with business stakeholders within the North African region

Working hours and remuneration:

Conditioned working hours are 40 hours gross per week. Standard working hours are from 08:00-16:30 from Monday to Thursday and 08:00-13:00 on Fridays. This is a full time position. We are happy to consider flexible working arrangements in line with current embassy terms and conditions of service.

There will be travel requirements in country and possibly outside of Tunisia.

The British Embassy in Tunisia offers an attractive working environment and remuneration package for this role. Initial salary will be TND 3603 per month while on probation. Salary after probation is TND 4460. This is a Full-time, One Year Fixed Term with a possibility of extension contract.

The successful applicant will have access to a range of Learning and Development opportunities with in-house and e learning, with the potential for overseas training. From time to time, there will be opportunities to assist other teams within the Department for International Trade, through delivery of training and awareness sessions.

The successful candidate will be subject to a 90-day probationary period.

The appointment will also be subject to satisfactory local and UK security clearances.
