Applications are invited for the position of Food and Drink Trade Associate (Grade A2) at the British Consulate-General in Toronto with the Department for International Trade (DIT). The position will have a start date of July 2017 subject to successful local and overseas security clearances. 

The successful applicant will work as part of the DIT network across Canada, promoting UK Food and Drink exports by working on our High Value Food and Drink campaign, assisting British Food and Drink companies to develop their business in Canada and helping Canadian companies source British goods and business partners.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assisting with the conception, planning and delivery of trade missions, inward buyer visits to the UK, trade show booths, seminars, tastings, receptions, official visits and other events to promote the UK’s strengths food and drink. Provide event management and logistical support where necessary.
  • Conducting research on best routes to market and potential Canadian business partners for UK food and drink exporters looking to enter the Canadian market.
  • Supporting the management of key relationships with UK clients and Canadian importer/buyer contacts.
  • Responding to enquiries from UK suppliers regarding exporting to Canada and provide market advice.
  • Helping Canadian buyers to source British goods by identifying relevant UK products/suppliers and facilitating introductions.
  • Attending trade shows and key business events to promote the UK Food and Drink offer.

 

  • 1-2 years’ experience working in the Food and Drink sector preferred
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills – verbal and written
  • Graduate degree preferred
  • Strong project management and organisational skills, attentiveness to detail
  • A pro-active self-starter with the desire to find new business/opportunities/contacts and develop/maintain our network, adept at networking and comfortable with cold calling
  • Proven skills in time management and prioritization, and the ability to effectively manage, and execute multiple and competing tasks under tight deadlines
  • Applicants should have previous experience of working in a professional environment and be be flexible in their approach to work

 

  • Knowledge of the food and/or alcohol industry landscape in Canada and major players
  • Experience working for a food or alcohol supplier, importer, distributor, retailer, broker or agent
  • Experience in B2B business development, export promotion, sales, category management or importing.
  • Knowledge of the processes and requirements for importing food and drink products into Canada
  • Familiarity with or knowledge of the UK

The successful candidate may be required to travel within Canada and the UK and should be flexible in their approach to occasional work out of office hours. The appointment requires pre-existing legal status to live and work in Canada and will be subject to satisfactory references and local and overseas security clearances.

The target salary for this position is $46,783.68 annualized working a 37.5 hour work week.  Salary will be confirmed upon offer of employment.
