The British Embassy in Abu Dhabi has a vacancy for an Economic Adviser, Grade C4 (L) for the Chancery who will lead on economics.

The Role:

The successful candidate will provide analysis, advice and reporting on economic issues and promote the UK’s interests and build mutual understanding with our hosts in these areas. There is considerable potential for you to use and expand your networking skills to seek ways in which the UK and UAE can work together. You will also manage the energy and climate change officer. You will need to have excellent organisation and prioritisation skills in a fast paced team. And you will need to work extensively with other team and staff members as well as external contacts. There will be regular contact with Emirati and international institutions.

This is a busy and interesting role in the Embassy which we are looking to fill with an individual who is self-driven, creative and willing to adapt to the requirements of the position which may vary during your time at the Embassy.

The role provides an excellent opportunity for someone with a keen interest in economics and politics, government or international relations, who would like to develop their analytical and communication skills.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide expert, high quality analysis, advice and reporting to London stakeholders on UAE economic developments, including a weekly roundup of economic and energy developments;
  • Help shape our engagement with interlocutors to support our policies;
  • Respond by deadlines to UK government enquiries, providing accurate data and high quality responses;
  • Contribute to wider regional economic reporting and work closely with the regional Prosperity network and Department of International Trade (DIT) colleagues in support of the UK prosperity agenda;
  • Manage the energy and climate change officer;
  • Create and maintain a strong network of national and international contacts to progress our engagement;
  • Organise official visits which are related to economics/finance and as requested by the team leader;
  • Contribute to the smooth running of the Political/Economic section and broader Embassy by actively contributing to corporate discussions;
  • Participate in emergency planning and response as required.

Essential:

  • A degree in economics or a degree with a strong Economic component as well as a detailed understanding of current economic trends and issues.
  • A minimum of 3 years of experience working in a related field.
  • Excellent analytical and communications skills including fluency in both written and spoken English.
  • Be a confident self-starter with strong networking and relationship management skills in order to develop and maintain a wide network of contacts in the UAE and London across Departments: the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO), HM Treasury, Bank of England, the Department of International Trade.
  • Flexible approach, strong initiative and adaptability to changing UK priorities.
  • Ability to work independently and to take the initiative as well as being able to work well with others.

Desirable:

  • Arabic language skills.

Working Hours and Remuneration:

The Embassy aims to offer an attractive working environment and remuneration package for this role, including: salary of AED 19,388 per month inclusive, performance bonus, five weeks vacation per annum plus office holidays, on-site parking and on-site swimming pool, gymnasium and sports facilities.  The contract will be a 2 Year Fixed term contract.

No accommodation and relocation expenses are payable in connection with this position. 

Conditioned working hours are 38 hours per week. Standard working hours are from 07:30 to 14:30 from Sunday to Thursday.
