Main purpose of job:

An exciting and challenging opportunity to work at the UK Mission to the United Nations, delivering UK policy on the UN Secretary-General’s ambitious new UN Development System reform agenda, and driving UK engagement with the Economic and Social Council (also undergoing a reform process). You’ll be working for a Government who cares about these issues and whose thought-leadership is influential.

The successful candidate will join a busy team that leads on the UK’s overall engagement on international development, economic and finance, health and climate change at the UN. You will work with policy managers and colleagues across a broad spectrum of British Government departments to develop and deliver UK policy in relation to the UN – delivering UK aims and influencing UN reform processes during a critical period of consultations and negotiations this year. You will also manage our strategic engagement with the Economic and Social Council more broadly, and lead on the specific development issue of Education, Science and Innovation.

 The ideal candidate will have a flexible approach and be a strong team player. You will be comfortable managing competing and evolving demands in a fast-paced environment, and demonstrate an enthusiasm for making a positive contribution to the workings and culture of the team and wider mission. You will be part of an energetic and friendly team of eight with a strong team ethos and a belief in enabling each other to excel. You will also work with other parts of the Mission, and should contribute to setting up Ministerial visits to the UN, putting on events and coordinating activity across the team and wider Mission. There will likely be some travel opportunities, including to London to meet with UK Government policy leads.



Main Duties and Responsibilities:


-  Deliver UK aims on the UN Secretary-General’s Development System reform agenda, providing policy support to the Development Counsellor and cross-Mission reform team;


-  Ensure coordinated and effective engagement at the Economic and Social Council and Regional Economic Commissions, identifying opportunities for UK engagement and influencing reform processes;


-  Build and maintain up-to-date understanding of UK priorities and Member States positions on the policy area of Education, Science and Innovation, representing the UK on them, negotiating for the UK, preparing statements, briefs and reporting on these;


-  Build and manage effective relationships between the UK and key stakeholders on your Education, Science and Innovation, including working closely with the UN Secretariat, representing UK views to stakeholders as required;


-  Support the wider team in areas such as Ministerial visits programmes, events and coordination;


-  Assist in other policy areas and issues as needed, working flexibly and adjusting to changing priorities.

Essential characteristics are:

-  Excellent negotiation, influencing and communication skills, including written communications, in English (UK Civil Service “engaging internationally” competence)


-  Ability to deliver high quality results on multiple areas of work to tight deadlines (UK Civil Service “delivering at pace” competence)


-  A team player able to work flexibly and prioritise across a variety of policy areas (UK Civil Service “Making effective decisions” competence),


-  Bachelors degree (or equivalent)


-  Three years’ experience in a relevant field

 


Desirable characteristics are:


-  Knowledge and understanding of the UN, international relations or international development


-  Familiarity of working in public service, particularly the UK civil service


-  Willingness to undertake international travel
