The British Embassy in Rome is part of a world-wide network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas. The Embassy is now looking for a Foreign Policy Officer who will take on specific geographical and thematic portfolios and liaise with the Italian Foreign Ministry and other external influencers, such as think tanks and academics.

As a NATO and G7 partner, the Italian government is an important partner for the UK on foreign policy issues, not least on Ukraine, Libya, and the Western Balkans. The foreign policy team in Rome is central to HMG’s efforts and is in regular contact with the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and other important stakeholders. 

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will be expected to help deliver HMG policy objectives in Italy, on foreign and security policy, by: 

  • following media and parliamentary debates on foreign policy (including in the European Parliament) and reporting regularly to London;
  • supporting the team, which also covers energy, climate, justice, home affairs and migration policy, in the organisation and delivery of events;
  • delivering inward visits and conducting research; and
  • managing the team’s country based intern, ensuring they are adding the best possible value to the team’s work.

The jobholder will also be asked to participate actively in the corporate work of the Embassy and contribute to other cross-cutting activities, for instance through membership of one of the staff committees.

  • English and Italian (to at least C1*) and ability to produce drafts, reports and analysis in both languages;
  • At least one to two year’s relevant experience;
  • Strong ability to work collaboratively and deal with a variety of internal and external stakeholders, often at senior level;
  • Good eye for detail along with an ability to see the bigger picture;
  • Good working knowledge of Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, and Teams;
  • Strong organisational and time management skills – ability to manage competing priorities.
  • Some experience/ working of delivering events may be useful.
  • Experience working in an international environment.

This is a full-time 12-month contract position, graded Executive Officer (EO) according to the FCDO grading structure. The annual gross salary is € 44,690 with an additional payment of € 10.33 EDR paid 13 times per year. There are 14 salary payments in a calendar year, with double salary payments in June and December. If working less than a full calendar year, the additional salary payments will be pro-rata.

Working hours are 35 hrs per week Monday to Friday typically 09.00 – 17.00.

The appointment is subject to security clearance, professional background check and the successful completion of a five (5) month probationary period.

All staff employed by the British Embassy Rome are subject to Italian income tax rate deductions  (IRPEF).  However, the administration of these tax payments will vary depending on nationality.

The successful candidate will be enrolled in the Italian State Social Security Scheme. Staff recruited locally by the British Embassy in Rome are subject to terms and conditions of service according to local Italian employment law.

 

Visa/work permit requirements: Candidates must currently hold the independent right to live and work in Italy and be prepared to ensure that right remains throughout the scope of the contract.
