The British Embassy in Berlin is part of a world-wide network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas. The EU Economic Section is currently looking to recruit a full-time EU & Economic Support Officer.

This is an opportunity to play an important role in the EU Economic section in the British Embassy in Berlin. As part of the support team, you will provide administrative and policy support to policy officers, including collating information and completing routine returns. You will support visits by Ministers and senior UK officials and assist with events management. You will ensure good record keeping and assist with budget control. In Berlin, you will have the opportunity to play a full part in the life of the EU Economics team and the Mission. You may have an opportunity to travel throughout Germany and occasionally to travel to London to assist with projects and events management.

Roles and responsibilities:

  • To create detailed programmes and make practical arrangements for visits by senior officials and Ministers on EU related business. This will involve arranging travel, hotel and logistical arrangements and working closely with Mission colleagues and stakeholders;
  • To liaise with UK Government departments, the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs, other German Government Departments, hotels and non Government bodies;
  • To provide logistical support and assistance in delivery of British embassy events. This will include organisation and budgetary management of embassy-led events, including receptions, debates and presentations with external guests;
  • Programme administration - responsible for profiling spend, monitoring risks, providing progress reports and undertaking other administrative arrangements related to programme funding;
  • Administrative support to political team – including managing and profiling travel and entertainment budgets;
  • Compiling routine returns to London, collecting data from policy colleagues, and transcribing it into the correct format, ensuring deadlines are met. Drawing on information from policy colleagues to produce reports, including graphs and diagrams;
  • Policy-focussed support, subject areas to be determined by operational requirements but potentially including financial services, trade, citizens, digital, environment and agriculture;
  • The job holder will work closely with other members of support staff, co-ordinating efforts and providing a flexible resource as necessary. This may mean providing support to other sections in the Embassy, as required.

  • Excellent English and German language communication skills, both orally and written (minimum of C1 level for CEFR framework*);
  • Minimum of 2 years of work experience in a support and /or in an administrative role;
  • Experience in event management;
  • Experience in project management;
  • Budget management skills and experience;
  • Ability to effectively communicate with internal and external stakeholders, verbally and in writing;
  • Ability to work in a team and independently;
  • Good knowledge of MS Excel and other MS Office programmes;
  • Knowledge of British Government structure and ways of working, interest in politics;

This is a full-time position of five working days 37.5 hours per week, for a fixed-term contract of 12 months with possibility of renewal of 12 months.

Staff recruited locally by the British Embassy in Germany are subject to Terms and Conditions of Service according to local German employment law.
