The British Embassy Riyadh is looking for an energetic person to work as a Part-time Translator (Grade A1(L)) in the Embassy’s small Translation Team. The work mostly involves translation from English into Arabic, with some Arabic to English.

The team is at the heart of the Embassy’s work, facilitating the exchange of information and messages between Britain and Saudi Arabia across the full range of bilateral issues.

The jobholder will be responsible for producing and checking translations to ensure they meet the highest standards of accuracy; the right nuance is vital. The material translated ranges widely in subject matter and style, and can be commissioned by all sections of the Embassy.

The jobholder will need to work to a consistent standard often under pressure, delivering excellent translations against deadlines and building productive relationships with customers and other team members. He/ She will contribute to maintaining a positive and happy working environment and have a keen focus on learning and development. Continuous improvement on the job and a willingness to become more proficient is essential.


The role is part-time and will require flexible working, based around a 25-hour work week. Additional hours will be agreed upon according to the Embassy's Terms and Conditions of Service.


Duties and responsibilities:

  • Provide timely and accurate translation for all types of documents as well as provide interpretation support if/ when required
  • Provide support to the Translation Team. Complete other administrative tasks in support of the team where necessary.
  • Play an active role in support of wider Embassy objectives.
  • Be responsible for own professional development.

  • Translation qualification and/ or relevant experience
  • Proven ability to produce accurate and timely translations from English into Arabic and Arabic into English
  • Fluency in English and Arabic (reading, writing, and speaking)
  • Strong willingness to learn and develop translation skills
  • Ability to work well in a team, understand and respect diversity 
  • Ability to manage resources including own time and tasking
  • Ability to work well under pressure and deliver to deadlines
  • Understanding of service delivery and customer needs
  • Excellent IT skills in Windows OS and MS Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint)
  • Experience of technical translation using specialist vocabulary
  • An active interest in current affairs

Salary details:

  • Base Salary including Eid bonus - SAR 3,126.19
  • Housing Allowance - SAR 781.55 (subject to eligibility)*
  • Travel Allowance - SAR 400 (subject to eligibility)*

 *Allowances are not payable to staff who receive official provision for such expenditure in some other form.

 No accommodation or relocation expenses are payable.

 Normal working hours for the Embassy are 08.00 to 15.00 Sunday to Thursday. This position is part-time at 25 hours per week

The successful candidate will be subject to a 90-day probationary period.

Eligibility:

The position is available to Saudi nationals and holders of Saudi residence permits or transferable Iqamas. Successful candidates will be required to transfer their sponsorship to the British Embassy.
