The British Embassy in Paris is part of a world-wide network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas. We are currently looking for a Criminal Justice Assistant to provide support to our Criminal Justice Advisor.

The Criminal Justice Advisor’s main goal is to develop bilateral cooperation with the French authorities in the field of organised immigration crime, by working closely with UK and French colleagues to facilitate successful investigations and prosecutions of identified criminal networks. That post is based in Paris but involves frequent travel across France including Boulogne, Calais, Dunkirk and Lille.

Therefore, the successful candidate for the advertised position will provide assistance to the Criminal Justice Advisor by undertaking a wide range of administrative and organisational tasks aimed at delivering conferences, positive operational outcomes, and supporting the Advisor’s role. There will be a degree of autonomy in the role during which the successful candidate will be expected to identify tasks which will assist the Criminal Justice Advisor or the wider network.

The role will involve close collaboration with UK Government stakeholders and key French partners so excellent interpersonal skills and language skills are essential. Organisational skills are also pre-requisite, as well as accuracy and an attention to detail.

Whilst the main purpose of this role is to provide administrative and organisational assistance to the Criminal Justice Adviser, the job holder will be encouraged to develop an understanding of policy work and may have opportunities to shadow other colleagues. This job will give the successful candidate an opportunity to gain experience in working with the Crown Prosecution Service, UK law enforcement and the French justice authorities.

What will be your key responsibilities?

  • Organise all logistics and compile programmes for incoming/outgoing conferences, visits and events;
  • Provision of written and spoken translation services for the Criminal Justice Advisor and stakeholders, sometimes at pace;
  • Conduct ad-hoc open-source research and analysis, presenting findings in a logical and concise manner;
  • Managing Criminal Justice Advisor’s diary appointments including organising meetings, preparing and distributing agendas, briefing papers and minutes;
  • Draft responses and assist with report writing for dissemination to UK and French partners;
  • Attend a range of events, meetings and conferences in support of the Criminal Justice Advisor to strengthen the UK-France bilateral relationship;
  • Liaise with partners across the Embassy in pursuit of HMGs ‘one platform’ approach through joint working;
  • General office administration and support to the Criminal Justice Advisor;
  • Delivering project work to enhance bi-lateral cooperation and progress UK priorities.
  • Proficient level of English and French (both written and spoken, C2 level according to the CEFR framework*);
  • Minimum of 2 years of professional experience in a similar role;
  • Excellent communication skills with an ability to work with a range of stakeholders and to convey messages in a professional way;
  • Strong organisational and time management skills – ability to manage competing priorities;
  • Ability to build, maintain and develop relationships with internal and external stakeholders;
  • The ability to work effectively within a small team;
  • Excellent working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint);
  • High level of discretion and integrity;
  • Flexibility. Occasionally the position may require the job holder to work extended hours or work flexibly, sometimes at short notice.
  • Legal or law enforcement experience;
  • Previous experience of working in an international environment.
