The United Kingdom Mission in Geneva is looking for a highly motivated Intern to participate in and support the Mission’s multilateral work as an integral part of the UK delegation to the UN, under the guidance of senior staff.

They will work in the Humanitarian and Protracted Crises Team. The intern will monitor meetings and events at the International Labour Organisation and other UN agencies, draft reports from meetings, and participate in organising events and high-level visits.

The successful applicant will also work on UN reform issues and will liaise with key UN agencies and Geneva based Missions on this issue. They will be expected to flex across team priorities, to help cover meetings on wider humanitarian and protracted crises issues as necessary. A supervisor will guide the intern and provide on-the-job training and evaluation. The internship will offer the intern an opportunity to get insight into the work of the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office and to learn about working on multilateral issues in an international context.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Monitor meetings and events across team priorities, draft reports from meetings.

  • Participate in organising events and high-level visits.

  • Assist with team administration and provide team management support.

  • Work on UN reform thematic issues, implementing the Mission’s objectives and liaising with key UN agencies and Geneva based Missions on this issue.


  • Fluency in written and spoken English;
  • Strong interest in humanitarian policy, multilateral policy, international relations or other relevant discipline;

  • The successful candidate needs to be highly motivated, flexible, and have excellent skills in communication and organisation;

  • Willingness to undergo a mandatory security check;

  • IT skills: Good working knowledge of MS Word.


  • University degree in the field of Humanitarian Policy or International Relations;

  • Prior internship or work experience in the context of the UN, in particular from Geneva;

  • Knowledge of French.

All applicants should have permission to live and work in Switzerland. Applicants must hold a full passport valid for at least 12 months for any EU / Schengen country.

EU nationals do not require visa sponsorship.

The UK Mission will offer the intern a monthly training allowance of 1,250 CHF. Please note that the intern will need to arrange and pay for his or her own travel, accommodation, mandatory health insurance, as well as any other costs. This internship will be for a period of 6 months with possibility of extension.

The cost of a monthly travel card within Geneva will be reimbursed.

The final appointment will be dependent upon successful security clearance. Please note that selected candidates need to submit the security forms before the internship starts.
