Economic and Prosperity

Lead the business environment work for the Embassy, reporting to a senior diplomat who is the Head of Economic Development. Act as point of contact for companies on specific trade barriers raised by British Industry to suggest policy actions. Working hand in hand with the Department of International Trade and British Chamber to conduct horizon scanning of new commercial sectors.  Manage the team’s intern.

Roles and responsibilities:

This is a key role at the heart of the UK’s economic development and trade work in Peru.  Peru has seen impressive economic growth in the last decade, but that growth is not universal, nor is it without its challenges.  The UK seeks to support continued growth, especially in areas of key British interest.  This role is at the heart of that effort on a core area of the economic and commercial development agenda.

The successful candidate will need to establish quickly a network of contacts at different levels (ministries, academics, embassies, international organisations, businesses) to report on related developments in Peru and communicate to the British industry appropriately. You would ideally need to have a solid understanding on how the Peruvian government operates while at the same time responding to needs of our private companies. It’s an exciting role on both trade and development, with access to senior decision-makers both within the British Embassy (including the Ambassador) and within the Peruvian government and private sector.

The responsibilities of the incumbent include:

1. Business Environment

  • Provide analysis and advice on the business environment in Peru to improve opportunities for British companies. The incumbent is currently working on issues of Intellectual Property and Procurement. He/she is expected to respond to reporting requirements from London and inform briefings as required.
  • Oversee an effective case management system of trade barriers cases, identifying common trends and suggesting policy solutions. Work will vary from regulatory/bureaucracy barriers to high profile cases in trade agreements.

 2.      Horizon Scanning

  • Engage widely with the public and private sector to identify future/long term opportunities for UK companies in Peru. Highlight sectors that are worth us investing time in, and build appropriate relationships that allow us to develop them.

 3. To line manage an intern.

  • Provide effective management to an intern, providing coaching and guidance.

The successful candidate will be expected to make frequent recommendations to resolve issues faced by British industry, The candidate is encouraged to attempt innovative solutions to deliver outcomes in line with the UK’s objectives in Peru.  As such it offers an exciting opportunity to help shape the agenda over the next couple of years.

To be successful you’ll need to be able to demonstrate extremely strong written and oral communication skills – the ability to form coherent arguments and persuade someone (often more senior) of your point of view is essential.

You’ll need to be a team player – we are not a large Embassy and we can only succeed by working together.  And you’ll need to demonstrate both resilience and flexibility to respond as priorities change.).  In return, we promise a challenging and stimulating working environment, supporting work on issues that could make a real difference to Peru’s future.

  • Good team player.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Flexibility.
  • Fluency in English and Spanish, spoken and written.
  • Three years of previous experience on international relations, economic diplomacy, international cooperation or related subjects.
  • Previous policy support experience.
  • Previous experience managing relationships with companies.
