The British High Commission Port Moresby is part of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO)’s world-wide network of 270 Posts, representing British political, military, economic, visa and consular interests overseas. We are currently looking to recruit a Political Officer to lead the High Commission political team covering economic and political developments with particular focus on climate change, energy, human rights and governance.


Roles and responsibilities

Act as the primary point for political research and analysis on PNG politics in support of UK political objectives for PNG:

Provide information and advice to the High Commissioner and Deputy High Commissioner on all aspects of internal politics in PNG:

  •  Research and analyse developments in PNG on democracy and human rights
  •  Report on a regular basis about political events in PNG, including a weekly round-up of relevant news

Provide written and oral analysis on political and economic issues including those that will have a long term impact on the UK’s prosperity agenda and British Business Opportunities.

Establish and maintain relations with extensive key economic and political contacts, including the media; civil society; government agencies, and business; to help inform proactive independent analysis.

Ensure that regular weekly and ad-hoc reports completed to inform the political desk in London of developments within Papua New Guinea, these reports should include read-outs of parliamentary sessions and the Autonomous region of Bougainville.

Provide support to any other wider High Commission objectives and initiatives

  • Personal drive and the ability to be a self-starter as well as a team player, focus on delivery and ability to reprioritise and deal with a changing environment
  • Fluent English language skills, both written and spoken
  • Excellent proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly Microsoft Excel, with experience of Oracle systems and databases preferred
  • The job holder must be prepared for occasional travel within the region
  • Fluency in Tok Pisin is an advantage
  • Some out of hours work may be required
