Main purpose of job:

To support the British High Commission’s work in Botswana through analysis and policy advice on political and economic developments in Botswana and the region and increase trade, commercial and bilateral links between the UK and Botswana and strengthen the UK-Botswana relationship.

Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?:

This is an exciting opportunity to work as part of a team in a small High Commission and to support the UK’s bilateral objectives and priorities in Botswana.

  • To provide detailed, informed, timely, strategically aware and relevant reporting on political and economic developments in Botswana related to UK priorities.
  • To analyse the impact of business and economic developments in Botswana on UK interests, to identify opportunities for British business in Botswana and to provide advice to British businesses on local market conditions.
  • To support Botswana’s economic development by promoting better environment for doing business and the support the implementation of relevant trade agreements in Botswana including the European Economic Partnerships Agreement and the World Trade Organisation Trade Facilitation agreement.
  • To build strong relationships with a wide range of stakeholders and spot opportunities to deepen bilateral relations in line with shared UK and Botswana objectives and priorities.
  • As a member of the political team, you will be fully involved with the day-to-day tasks of bilateral diplomacy including monitoring developments, organising events and programmes for visiting ministers and officials, interacting with Botswana government and other diplomatic missions.

The jobholder will line manage two officers and have oversight of small projects and scholarship funds

  • Flexible, resilient under pressure and decisive with a proven track record of delivering results to a high standard within tight deadlines.
  • Strong organisational and analytical skills, including excellent written and spoken English.
  • A strong academic record to degree level or relevant work experience.
  • Knowledge of Botswana Political and Economic system.

There may be a requirement for occasional travel within Botswana, the region or to the UK for training. The successful candidate will have access to the wide range of topics covered through Civil Service training. Learning and development needs will be discussed at the beginning of the officer’s contract and is widely encouraged through the Regional Learning and Development Centre through the Diplomatic Academy.
