The British Embassy in The Hague is recruiting for a full-time Policy Officer (Economic Affairs). We are looking for an enthusiastic customer oriented self-starter, with excellent organisational, analytical, and communication skills.

As a Policy Officer (Economic Affairs) your role will be to promote UK economic and prosperity interests in the Netherlands in line with Foreign and Commonwealth Office objectives. You will monitor, analyse, and report on economic, social, and environmental policy developments in the Netherlands. To achieve your objectives you will need to develop and maintain a network of contacts proactively. You will facilitate outreach by helping UK officials build relationships with Dutch counterparts and stakeholders in business, think tanks, and civil society. You will be required to brief senior colleagues, provide policy analysis, draft written reports, and be able to communicate the UK’s position to external contacts effectively. Working on projects, you will organise meetings and deliver events. You will be working in a fast-paced environment and will be able to work to deadlines.

The successful candidate will join the Embassy’s Policy Team, working closely with the Ambassador, the Deputy Head of Mission, and Policy Team colleagues working on bilateral and EU Exit issues.

 

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Reporting and analysing developments in Dutch economic, social affairs, and environmental policy;

  • Contributing to wider Embassy policy analysis;

  • Responding to enquiries from UK Government departments on a range of policy issues, particularly around economic, social, and environmental affairs;

  • Arranging programmes for visiting UK politicians and officials to the Netherlands. Briefing and accompanying visitors during their stay in the country as required;

  • Promoting UK prosperity initiatives by working with colleagues on targeted projects;  

  • Developing and maintaining a broad network of contacts;

  • Representing the Embassy in meetings with Dutch Government and other external stakeholders;

  • Engaging across the Embassy and with external stakeholders on policy matters, developing initiatives, and taking them forward;

  • Providing support to the wider work and activity of the Policy and Communications Team;

  • Carrying out ad hoc research projects;

  • Providing cover for colleagues during periods of absence;

     

NB. The above breakdown of responsibilities is subject to changes in priorities, and may evolve over time and in response to changing circumstances.  The role exists as part of a team and all staff are expected to be flexible in supporting colleagues, particularly at busy times.


  • Clear understanding and knowledge of current economic affairs and EU issues;

  • Strong networking and influencing skills;

  • Excellent written skills;

  • Experience of project work and delivering events;

  • Ability to think strategically and creatively;

  • Ability to grasp complex issues quickly and communicate these simply and effectively;

  • Good IT skills, including experience of Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint;

  • Excellent Dutch and English (written and spoken);

  • Excellent Communication skills.

     



  • Experience of working in a policy environment, in particular in the fields of economic, social and environmental affairs;

  • Knowledge of UK government and political institutions and processes;

  • Knowledge of Dutch government and political institutions and processes;

  • University Degree (Bachelor or Master) – preferably in economics or an economic issues related subject, politics, international relations, or public policy.

The successful candidate will initially be offered a full-time, 1 year fixed term employment contract at B3 level. The base salary for this position is €3,478 gross per month, based on a working week of 36 hours. In addition, an 8% annual holiday allowance and a monthly travel allowance are payable. The Embassy currently applies a performance based bonus pay model for local staff.

Applicants must be legally entitled to work in The Netherlands. Please note that The Embassy is not a tax withholding employer. Consequently staff members are responsible for paying their own income tax and social security on the gross salary received.

The successful candidate will undergo a professional background check; any job offer is also provisional to a successful security clearance check.
