Main purpose of job

Trade and investment is at the very heart of British government policy.  The UK’s Department for International Trade (DIT) helps British businesses to export, supports inward and outward investment, and champions free trade.  Peru is an important business partner for the UK, and there is great potential to grow our trade and investment relationship.

DIT is looking for a Business Development Officer to work as part of the DIT team at the British Embassy in Lima.  The successful applicant will help the team develop bilateral business opportunities and deliver projects in key economic sectors including Healthcare and Life Sciences.  Duties will include researching business opportunities and market access issues, meeting business contacts, writing briefing notes, support with organising high profile events and developing visit programmes, and helping deliver priority projects, often within short time frames.  The jobholder will also support the Account Management for a key group of British companies.  Great team working skills, flexibility, resilience and professionalism are essential for this role.

What will the jobholder be expected to achieve?

  • To support DIT’s engagement in key business sectors in Peru, including Healthcare and Life Sciences.
  • To help account manage a group of British companies, providing advice and support.
  • To help identify, develop and maintain a pipeline of projects and opportunities in support of our target of commercial wins for UK business.
  • To support a programme of events including exhibitions and conferences, trade missions, webinars and networking events.
  • Working in close partnership with colleagues to support the wider work of the DIT Peru team and other Embassy teams, including help with planning high-level events and VIP visits, analysis and briefing.
  • Identifying and taking-up opportunities to improve existing skills and/or develop new ones.
  • Fulfilling the requirements of performance appraisal process, including establishing and executing a personal development plan; fully comply with DIT and Embassy policies and embrace the Embassy values of Respect, Innovation, Collaboration and Enjoyment.
  • Performing other reasonable tasks as requested by the Director and Deputy Director/Head of Operations of DIT Peru.

Essential on arrival:

  • Bachelor’s Degree (or equivalent).
  • Excellent written and oral communication (fluent in English and Spanish).
  • Team player with strong interpersonal skills.
  • Passionate about the world of business.
  • Exemplary work ethic and a flexible approach. 
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • 12 months professional experience (minimum).
  • Highly proficient user of MS Office, PowerPoint etc.

Desirable

  • Relevant post-graduate course in economics, trade, business administration, international relations or related subjects.
  • Experience in business development and client relationship/account management.
