Main purpose of job:

To support British business success in Burma.

Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?:

The Department for International Trade is the British Government department that is responsible for trade promotion. Our role is to help UK businesses succeed in overseas markets; we opened our office in Rangoon in 2012 and our team is consolidating to meet the high level of interest from UK businesses.

Key duties are as follows:

  • Sector lead for Energy and Advanced Engineering
  • Regular liaison with DIT Burma’s partner British Chamber of Commerce Myanmar and other related commercial associations in Burma and the UK
  • Take responsibility for responding to trade enquiries from British businesses in the specified sectors in a clear accurate and timely way
  • Develop comprehensive knowledge of  the specified sectors and produce regular reporting on them for dissemination to British businesses
  • Manage client relationships including developing a strong network of contacts in the private and public sectors in Both Burma and the UK, to help support British business interest
  • Identify opportunities for British business in Burma and promote these opportunities appropriately and creatively
  • Organise and deliver programmes for visiting British business representatives
  • Support other DIT and British Embassy initiatives when they arise, and take responsibility for new projects including Economic Horizons Programme, VIP visits to Burma and to the UK.

The successful candidate will be an enthusiastic team player who has the ability to take initiative and think strategically when required. The role will involve working within the wider British Embassy team and is therefore ideal to him/her who is interested to learn how a diplomatic mission operates. Some evening and weekend work will be required as will travel to the UK and in the region. Experience in the Energy and/or Advanced Engineering sector in either the public or private sector is desirable but not essential. The initial appointment is 1 year with a probation period of 3 months and the contract is renewable subject to satisfactory performance and fund availability.

Essential

  • A college or university level degree in Energy/Geo-Science/Offshore Engineering/Marine Technology (or) Business/Management is more preferred
  • Proven track record of work experience in a relevant field
  • Strong national and/or regional knowledge of energy (hydrocarbon exploration or renewable energy generation) and advanced engineering/manufacturing sectors
  • Fluency in English and Burmese, both oral and written 
  • Strong IT skills and a good knowledge of social media
  • Ability to work without supervision and on own initiative
  • Post-graduate degree in a relevant field is desirable
  • Experience of working with business firms, commercial associations and governments
  • Experience of successful stakeholder relationship management
  • Experience in managing projects and organising events
  • Proven track record as a good team player
