The Welsh Government

The British Embassy in Berlin is a large overseas mission in the FCDO (Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office) network, with a considerable number of official visitors including Royals and senior ministers. We are looking for a Business Development Executive to the Welsh Government.

The Welsh Government (WG) is committed to fostering and growing trade and investment opportunities between Germany and Wales. This commitment saw the WG open two offices in Germany in 2018 – an office at The British Embassy Berlin and an office at The British Consulate-General in Düsseldorf. These offices are supported by the network in Wales and the WG European offices in Brussels, Paris, Ireland, London and a wider global network of WG offices.

Team members have lead responsibility for strengthening trade and investment links between Wales and their respective regions; the office in Berlin is responsible for links across the whole of Germany.

The role of Business Development Executive is to assist in identifying and developing foreign direct investment (FDI) leads, as well as trade opportunities for Welsh companies, across Germany. Expected outputs are the identification, and subsequent pursuit, of quality FDI leads, business networks, and profitable trade opportunities.

The role also requires an ability to assist in the wider representational requirements of the Welsh Government (WG) in Germany. The WG has extensive responsibility for a broad range of matters in Wales, from education and sustainability, to climate change and tourism. The successful applicant will help promote links between Wales and Germany across these areas, as well as more generally in governmental, academic, and cultural fields. The post holder will also manage the social media communications for the team.

The post holder will report to the WG’s Head of Germany and will be based in the British Embassy in Berlin.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Support the Head of Germany in identifying, developing and delivering new, quality inward investment projects;
  • Help the WG to develop strong networking relationships with decision makers and intermediaries across Germany;
  • Work with the Head of Germany and the Senior Business Development Manager in Düsseldorf to identify, develop and help to deliver incremental investment from existing investors;
  • Work closely with trade development colleagues in Wales to provide information and guidance for Welsh exporters, including advice on local trading conditions, market intelligence, key sector contacts, and bespoke research;
  • Work with trade development colleagues to help organise and deliver trade missions, liaising with UK Government networks, as well as local trade organisations and groups as appropriate;
  • Take responsibility for information management across the WG’s activities in Germany, by logging and updating budgets, business cases, reports, and FDI project pipelines;
  • Attend and utilise conferences, events, and seminars that offer opportunities to promote Wales as a business-friendly location, sharing feedback and intel with appropriate contacts in Wales and across the WG overseas network;
  • Assist and/or lead on bespoke events, seminars, Ministerial visits and other PR activity to promote Wales and the Welsh Government across Germany, as business requires;
  • Lead on the social media communications for Team Wales in Germany liaising with colleagues and stakeholders back in Wales.
  • Excellent oral and written English and  German (to at least level C1 CEFR);
  • Experience of working in a similar business development role for a government, regional agency or business;
  • Bachelor’s degree, or above, in a relevant field;
  • Comfortable with initiating and handling introductory calls with relevant companies;
  • Strong networking skills;
  • Ability to act as a credible representative for the WG in a wide range of public settings, in any of the fields for which the WG has responsibility;
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Excel, as well as social media networks;
  • Ability to undertake occasional travel within Germany and the UK as required.
  • Minimum 2 years professional experience in international business, preferably with a proven track record of fostering strong business relationships;
  • Knowledge of the business environments in the UK and Germany;
  • Familiarity with current economic, political and cultural context in Wales and the EU.
