The British Embassy in Budapest is part of the United Kingdom’s world-wide diplomatic network, and represents British political, economic and consular interests in Hungary and is now looking to recruit a Senior Economic Policy Officer. As part of the Embassy’s Policy Team, the Senior Economic Policy Officer will lead economic policy work to support the UK’s interests and prosperity, and deliver the Embassy’s Country Plan economic policy objectives.

Main tasks

  • Lead policy work in support of UK interests in economic policy, including all areas impacting the business environment, sustainability and more widely the economy and green economic recovery from the pandemic
  • Monitor and report economic policy related developments, spotting opportunities for engagement and providing  policy analysis that adds value for colleagues in Budapest and London
  • Develop and maintain contacts both in the UK and in Hungary, including in the public administration, think tanks, the National Banks and relevant business associations, trade unions and when necessary, individual businesses, targeting key decision-makers and influencers with a strategic approach.  Represent the UK’s position, including executing lobbying requests in a timely fashion
  • Deliver policy projects in support of economic policy objectives, sometimes in close co-operation with colleagues from other British Embassies in Central Europe
  • Prepare the Ambassador and the Deputy Ambassador for external events by providing lines to take and draft speeches
  • Represent the Embassy at lectures, conferences and participate in the network of Economic Policy Officers in British Embassies around the world
  • Lead work on organising inward & outward official visits and assisting in organising meetings and events
  • Contribute to the Senior Europe Policy Officer’s work on economic policy aspects of the UK’s new relationship with the EU, for example trade policy, transport policy and borders
  • Work with the Embassy’s commercial team to provide economic policy related support and work on joint projects in order to contribute to the UK’s prosperity.  Work with colleagues across the Embassy and contribute to the design and implementation of existing and new policy plans





  •       Deep understanding of global and local economic trends and developments and a college/university degree in economics and/or international relations
  • Strong analytical and reporting skills
  • Ability to develop network of contacts and work with contacts and colleagues at all levels
  • At least 4 years of work experience in a similar position
  • Ability to work autonomously as well as a member of a team
  • Confident user of office IT  (Outlook, Office, MS Teams)
  • Good time management skills and the ability to prioritise and multi-task
  • Strong organisational and planning skills
  • Attention to detail and good problem solving skills
  • Excellent English and Hungarian both verbal and written (minimum C1 level for CEFR framework *)



  • Experience in working in an international environment, public administration or diplomatic mission
  • Familiarity with project work and delivery, including experience in delivering regional projects

This is a full-time position of 5 days (35 hours net per week) for a maternity leave cover fixed-term contract of 1 year with the possibility of extension by mutual agreement.

The successful candidate will be subject to confirmation of a background check and security clearance. You must have pre-existing work authorisation for Hungary in order to apply.

Staff recruited locally by the British Embassy are subject to terms and conditions service according to Hungarian employment law.

Visa/work permit requirements: Candidates must currently hold the independent right to live and work in Hungary and be prepared to ensure that right remains throughout the scope of the contract.
