The British Embassy in Cairo is looking to recruit a Clerk of Works grade B3 (L) to manage the maintenance team (eight technicians) conducting repairs and/or refurbishments to residential and office properties on our estate comprising approximately 35 rented residential units (apartments and villas) and the main Embassy compound, facilities and properties.

The successful candidate will be an integral part of the Corporate Services team working to the Deputy Head of Corporate Services. You will also be expected to supervise external contractors employed to undertake remedial work or new projects for the British Embassy in Cairo, ensuring that all works are completed to the highest possible standards.

Senior Management at the Embassy take an active interest in the progress of all maintenance and new projects, as these often affect the health and wellbeing of our staff. There is a good support mechanism in place, and you will work closely with the Estate Manager (who has the overall strategic responsibility for the management of the estate), and the Technical Works Supervisor, a UK based technical consultant. The Head and Deputy Head of Corporate Services are involved in Estate Management on a daily basis.

Main purpose of the job:

To plan, oversee, quality assure and ensure the safe implementation of civil works and maintenance projects at the Embassy compound and at any of the numerous owned/rented properties in Cairo.

Main duties and responsibilities:

As Clerk of Works, you will be conducting regular site inspections and checking that building plans and maintenance schedules are being followed correctly. You will check that work is being carried out to the correct specifications and legal, safety and environmental standards.

The job role of a clerk of work involves the following duties:

  • Quality control the work of Embassy technicians and contractors, completed to the highest standards and to time and within budget;
  • Management of Embassy employed technicians. Promoting inclusion and diversity, ensuring Learning and
  • Development targets are met, and appraising staff in line with FCDO HR policies and procedures; and
  • Inspecting work and comparing it with drawings and specifications; and
  • Measuring and quality checking building materials; and
  • Identifying defects and suggesting ways to correct them; and
  • Planning future works, ensuring that resources are identified and made available in advance; and
  • Monitoring progress and reporting to the Estates Manager, Technical Works Supervisor and Deputy Head of Corporate Services; and
  • Keeping detailed records of work; and
  • Referring to plans and taking photographs of work, along with measurements and samples; and
  • Liaising with contractors, engineers and surveyors; and
  • Checking that building regulations, health and safety, legal and ecological requirements are met; and
  • Working between the compound and residential properties.

This list is not exhaustive and you may be required to carry out additional duties according to business needs.

The ideal candidate will need to have a good knowledge of construction and possess good English language communication skills. A good level of Arabic, both written and oral, would be an advantage. The successful canidate should be extremely well organised, personable and have a keen attention to detail.

A wide understanding of the building industry including knowledge of materials, trades, methods and legal requirements is important as is being attentive to detail and having strong interpersonal skills with colleagues and contractors.

Additionally, the following personal qualities would be an advantage:

  • Be thorough and pay attention to detail;
  • Customer service skills;
  • Ability to use your initiative to remain calm in stressful situations;
  • A good level of numeracy;
  • Ability to analyse quality and performance;
  • Good IT skills, and in particular Microsoft packages (including OS365, MS Teams and Project)

The Embassy aims to offer an attractive working environment and remuneration package for this role, including a non-negotiable gross salary of USD 1,374 per month subject to insurance and tax as per the usual regulations based on a 36 hours per week. However, employees who are not liable to pay local income tax on their Mission salary may have their salaries reduced by the equivalent local income tax amount. 

We offer a competitive package including medical benefits, performance related bonus, recreational facilities, opportunities for job related training & development, etc. This is for a full time employment, on a fixed term basis for one-year. The contract may be extended for up to 3 years, subject to satisfactory performance and on on-going business requirement.

There are no other allowances payable as part of this package. No accommodation and relocation expenses are payable in connection with this position.
