The British Embassy in Bucharest is part of a world-wide network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas and is looking to appoint a Senior Policy Officer to work as part of a busy and highly productive Political and Economics Team.

This is an exciting opportunity for a self-starter and a team player who can work without close supervision on multiple tasks and cope with tight deadlines. We offer the chance to work in an international environment and to become actively involved in key areas of EU and wider bilateral and regional policy during an extremely important period for the UK as it prepares to depart from the EU. This job would particularly suit someone who is seeking an in depth grounding in policy formation and analysis or who sees their future in international public administration.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Lead on cooperation between the UK and Romania on Justice and Home Affairs issues;
  • Developing a wide range of political contacts and using them effectively;
  • Deliver British Government objectives on Justice and Home Affairs issues including in the context of negotiations over to the UK’s withdrawal from the EU;
  • Deliver British Government objectives on energy and climate change policies and on other areas of the Country Business Plan;
  • Contributing to the delivery of the Embassy’s public diplomacy strategy via public events and speechwriting.

 

 

 

 

  • Excellent written and spoken English and Romanian;
  • A strong academic background;
  • Proven analytical skills ideally with a legal background;
  • An ability to deal effectively with senior Romanian and foreign officials and organisations and to represent the Embassy externally;
  • Proven organisational skills and strong initiative;
  • Ability to get up to speed quickly on issues of substance and deliver results.

 

  • Experience in political analysis is also desirable;
  • Experience working on justice reform and anti-corruption issues is not essential but would be an advantage.

This is a full time position of 5 days (35 hours net per week) for a maternity cover contract for a period of approximately 2 years. Working hours are flexible and staff are entitled to time-off-in-lieu for agreed extra hours worked.

The annual leave entitlement is 21 days per year pro rata and the Embassy also enjoys a maximum of 14 Romanian / UK public holidays per year.

Monthly salary is 5,584  RON gross. In addition, staff are entitled to a 13th month salary pro rata and may receive a performance related bonus at year end. Staff also receive meal vouchers and a monthly subscription to a medical centre. An individual personal development plan will be agreed with the successful candidate, which may include training outside Romania.

The successful candidate will be subject to confirmation of a background check and security clearance, and satisfactory completion of a probationary period of 90 days.
