Main purpose of job:

To lead the British Embassy’s Prosperity work. In particular to maintain and strengthen the Embassy’s relationships with the business community in Sudan, build understanding of the dynamics of the Sudanese business environment and identify and explore opportunities for greater UK commercial, educational and social enterprise engagement.

Roles and responsibilities

  • This high-paced and exciting position provides the key link between the British Embassy in Khartoum and Sudan’s private sector. The British Embassy has long enjoyed a good relationship with private sector organisations, and this job is responsible for maintaining and building upon those links, and ensuring we’re able to provide top quality analysis on the business and investment climate in Sudan. They will maintain and build upon our network, and identify opportunities for UK engagement and support.
  • The jobholder will deliver high quality, reliable and timely advice on private sector issues in Sudan, including on issues like innovation, entrepreneurship, start-ups and social enterprises. They will maintain, build and develop a network of economic and commercial contacts in Sudan to pursue Embassy objectives, and will help colleagues to identify opportunities to engage with the private sector in support of the whole range of Embassy  priorities. They will use these opportunities to raise the UK’s profile inside the business community in Sudan and promote a positive the benefits of the UK’s commercial, investment, innovation and educational offer.
  • They will also provide advice and support to UK companies and other organisations, e.g. universities and educational institutions, that are interested in Sudan, including on potential trade and investment opportunities. As part of this they will organise visit programmes and support other Embassy work on prosperity, institutional links, commercial and economic issues.
  • The jobholder will work closely with colleagues across the British Government in Sudan, the UK and elsewhere in the network, including from the Department for International Development (DFID), Department for International Trade (DIT) and British Council
  • Experience working in the private sector in Sudan
  • Strong IT skills; proficient in MS Office
  • Commitment to own learning and development and willingness to learn
  • Ability to work flexibly on own initiative
  • Strong communication & interpersonal skills
  • Understanding/first hand experience of UK
  • Knowledge of economics
