Main Purpose of Job
Support the work of the Science and Innovation Team within the British Embassy Network in Brazil, to strengthen science and innovation partnerships and research collaboration between Brazil and the United Kingdom.
Roles and Responsibilities
The United Kingdom is one of the most innovative countries in the world. British inventors brought us the light bulb, the telephone and the World Wide Web and continue to be at the forefront of new technologies including genomics, advanced materials and clean energy. The Science & Innovation (SIN) Team works with a range of UK and Brazilian stakeholders across government, academia and industry to continue to strengthen our bilateral science collaboration. We work on policy and projects focussed on our priorities themes: climate, health and emerging technologies.
We are a team of 7 people, 3 based in the British Embassy in Brasilia, and 4 in the British Consulate in São Paulo. This position is based in the British Embassy in Brasilia.
You will have particular responsibility for:
SIN Team Support (60%):
- Writing documents, including briefings, newsletters, emails and meeting notes.
- Document management, including digital filing and contact databases.
- Budgeting and monthly monitoring of SIN travel budget.
- Translation of emails, media reports, and ad hoc documents.
- Organising meetings, events, visits, workshops etc.
- Procurement of services (eg catering, flights) from external suppliers, ensuring value for money. Ensuring services are delivered to a high standard and payments are made promptly.
Communication Support (10%):
- Work with the SIN press officer to create opportunities and content for media activities to promote the team’s work, including press reports, tweets, social media and blogs.
Research (20%):
- Scan government publications, academia and the media for science information relevant to the team’s work.
- Prepare in-depth reports on key scientific developments in Brazil for UK stakeholders.
Support to the SIN Director (10%)
- Background research, managing correspondence, translation, support for travel arrangements.
You will be an important member of a friendly and energetic team, delivering a range of projects linked to cutting edge science. We need someone who is enthusiastic, pro-active and self-motivated, with great organisational, interpersonal and communications skills in both English and Portuguese. You will need to be flexible to respond to changing priorities and urgent pieces of work. In busy periods, you will need to be able to remain calm and work well under pressure.
We will give you on-the-job training and feedback, and, where possible, opportunities to combine your academic interests into your work. The UK Brazil Network has an active intern community that offers additional activities to learn and get involved in the diplomatic life of the mission.
We invite applications from students in at least their 3rd semester, who has at least a year left before they graduate.

Employees who are not liable to pay local income tax on their Mission salary, eg some non-local national staff and some spouses or partners of UK diplomatic staff, will have their salaries abated by an equivalent amount.
*This internship program is up to two years.

Working patterns
Flexible: 6 hours per day (Mon-Fri) within office working hours.
