Department for International Trade roles (DIT)
Department for International Trade (DIT)

The Department for International Trade (DIT) supports UK based businesses to export globally and encourages overseas companies to look to the UK as their global partner of choice and as a land alive with investment opportunities.

This is an opportunity to join the DIT team in the British High Commission Singapore as part of the Inward Investment Team.

This role is a key part of the Inward Investment team which is seeking to attract high quality corporate and high net worth investment into the UK with the aim of promoting prosperity and economic growth. The incumbent will play both a leading and supporting role across all the Investment Team’s areas of activity. Operating with a high degree of independence, there will be scope for the successful candidate to take ownership of projects and gain the satisfaction of delivering a world-class service.

The successful candidate will be part of a supportive and collaborative team based in the British High Commission. This role offers an opportunity to develop political, economic, and commercial knowledge of the UK and the business world in general, and would suit an adaptable, proactive team player.

What will the jobholder be expected to achieve?

The job holder will have a personal role in helping secure investment projects from all Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) sectors, meeting clients, identifying their specific requirements, and linking them into DIT’s UK teams. Specifically, the job holder will be expected to:

  • Become the team expert on a selection of target investment sectors and be ready to brief new clients on these.
  • Attend networking events alone and with the team to generate project pipeline leads, and use these opportunities to promote the UK’s core strengths, values, and opportunities.
  • Provide coordination and support for team events aimed at generating leads such as themed presentations, high-profile guests’ speaker events, and visits by HMG Ministers, officials, and project developers. The job holder will also offer occasional support for Trade Team colleagues who are hosting their own events.
  • Maintain the Inward Investment data management system and ensure that investment projects are reported back to the UK in accordance with DIT standards.
  • Take an active role in promoting investment opportunities using social media and other channels in coordination with other teams within the British High Commission.

This is a busy role in a small team. The successful candidate will have a proven ability to adapt and learn quickly, show flexibility, and work independently whilst still being a real team player. In a very transparent reporting structure, the successful candidate will be expected to identify and suggest ways in which team outputs can be improved.

The successful candidate is also expected to have excellent written and spoken English skills.

  • Relevant professional experience in the area of business development or working in a commercial or government agency environment dealing with and/or networking with external customers
  • A degree level qualification, preferably in business, marketing, or economics or equivalent
