The British Embassy in The Hague is part of a world-wide network, representing British political economic and consular interests overseas. We are seeking to recruit a Senior Business Development Executive (Energy), to represent SDI – Scottish Development International – which is an integral part of the Embassy.

In October 2016, the First Minister of Scotland announced that SDI’s resources in Europe would be supplemented to ‘double the number of SDI staff working across Europe’ to support Scottish companies to trade internationally during the uncertainty of the 2-year period of Brexit negotiations. This position has been identified as one of the additional staff roles which are being created across Europe. Each post is being recruited for a fixed-term appointment for the period during which the UK Government and the EU negotiate the UK’s exit from the EU and allowing for some limited extra time after this negotiation period ends to wrap up outstanding matters that have not been completed during the negotiation period itself.

The successful candidate will increase and widen the on-the-ground support available to Scottish companies operating in the energy sector including oil and gas, renewable energy and low carbon technologies, who have the ambition, capacity and capability to export their products and/or services into the Netherlands and neighbouring region. Additionally, will prospect, generate and support foreign direct investment activities and identify new opportunities from the same region to Scotland.

Main Duties and responsibilities:

To undertake the following during and in relation to the Brexit negotiation period:

  • Provide trade advice and guidance to Scottish companies wishing to access markets in the Netherlands region within the energy sector;

  • Support companies with their market entry and growth strategies;

  • Develop and maintain market-specific relationships and networks with key industry organisations and networks in the region;

  • Work with sector and account teams in Scotland to identify and deliver specific in-market trade opportunities for account managed companies;

  • Identify and attend sector specific trade shows, exhibitions and conferences in the region, reporting opportunities, trends and findings to sector teams and companies as appropriate;

  • Develop and deliver the Netherlands regional trade and inward investment energy sector strategy and operatingplans;

  • Respond to trade & investment team requests in supporting growth of Scottish exports by conducting market research, reporting & providing practical advice and facilitating the introductions to potential partners, customers and intermediaries on one-to-one and group basis;

  • Conduct industry analysis and segmentation to building strategic relations with key operators, contractors and potential investors;

  • Prepare the information required to respond to internal and external high-level visits and inter-government contacts;

  • Provide market intelligence and insight on the energy sector in the Netherlands e.g key projects and customers and identify any new opportunities to increase trade and investment.

The candidate will become a member of SDI EMEA team, will report to Regional and Sector Managers and work closely with SDI Trade and Investment team based in Scotland. The successful candidate will work to foster collaboration and links between Scottish companies and those in the Netherlands in the energy sector to support Scottish supply chain expertise and to promote Scotland as attractive investment location for key regional and global players. Working closely with a team of internal and external specialists, the candidate will help to increase export sales from Scotland and to create more high quality sustainable jobs in this sector in Scotland by bringing direct foreign investors from the region.

  • Knowledge and experience of working in the specific region;
  • Knowledge and understanding of the energy sector or must be able to demonstrate the ability to quickly acquire the requisite level of specialist knowledge to engage credibly with senior industry representatives in the sector;
  • Evidence of strong network links within the Netherlands;
  • Strong customer relationship management skills;
  • Ability to manage a diverse range of customer relationships and projects;
  • Strong communication skills, and must be IT literate and comfortable using MS Office platform as well as CRM systems;
  • Fluency in English.
  • Previous experience of working within an international trade and investment promotion related role;

  • Fluency in Dutch, or the proven ability to quickly learn new languages.

The successful candidate will initially be offered a one-year temporary contract, with potential for further 11 month extension at C4 level. Funding for this position is not guaranteed beyond that period, but if it were in the future, then a further contract renewal may be considered. The base salary for this position is  3.689,59€ gross per month, based on a working week of 36 hours. In addition, an 8% annual holiday allowance and a monthly travel allowance are payable. The Embassy currently applies a performance based bonus pay model for local staff.

Applicants must be legally entitled to work in The Netherlands. Please note that The Embassy is not a tax witholding employer. Consequently staff members are responsible for paying their own income tax and social security on the gross salary received.

The successful candidate will undergo a professional background check; any job offer is also provisional to a successful security clearance check.
