Summary: 

The British High Commission in Ottawa is recruiting a Head for its cross-Canada Science Innovation Network and to work on energy issues. The position is offered on a temporary basis to cover a maternity absence with a start date of March 2018, subject to receipt of successful security clearances.

This position will also oversee the UK’s the Global Partnership Fund in Canada. They will also liaise / work collaboratively with other policy groups within the British High Commission, the Canada network of Consulates General, British government departments and other British diplomatic posts around the world.

 This role manages the UK’s Science and Innovation Network in Canada, as well as the strategic development and delivery of the network’s programme of work. This is an exciting opportunity to represent UK interests to federal government departments, academic institutions, research institutes, S&I industries and research councils in the national capital region with a focus on collaborative opportunities. The successful candidate will work on a diverse portfolio of science, innovation and energy issues, with direct access to some of the most senior-level stakeholders in these communities.


Responsibilities:

  • Develop, agree, and oversee the delivery UK’s science and innovation objectives across Canada. Own and deliver a high-impact ambitious SIN business plan.
  • Formulate and deliver private and public lobbying campaigns in support of the UK’s energy, industrial strategy and science priorities.
  • Develop a network of senior government, academic and private sector contacts and use it to support UK priorities.
  • Participate in and support the High Commission’s outreach, communication and social media activities.
  • Support senior management and high-level events, meetings and visits.
  • Oversee programme funds to ensure that projects are well designed and delivered to high standards of governance and value for money.
  • A strong corporate, academic, and/or government background, preferably in public policy, with fluency in science, innovation and energy issues.
  • Knowledge of the UK, particularly its economy and science and innovation strengths and capabilities would be an asset.
  • Experience managing and developing staff, with experience managing remote teams an asset
  • Strong interpersonal skills and be capable of interacting effectively with members of the public, policy community, and senior government officials.
  • The ability to write clear, concise reports, to make effective presentations to a variety of audiences and to communicate complex issues to non-experts.
  • Work effectively and flexibly with others and be a team player.
  • Be reliable, positive and open to new ways of working.
