The British Embassy in Poland is part of a world-wide network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas and is now looking to recruit a full-time Office Assistant for Her Majesty’s Revenue & Customs (HMRC) Fiscal Crime Liaison Office team based in Warsaw.

HMRC is the UK’s tax and customs administration and is responsible for collecting tax revenue on behalf of the UK government, making sure that money is available to fund the UK’s public services and for helping families and individuals with targeted financial support. HMRC is also charged with closing the tax gap and reducing avoidance and evasion.

HMRC’s Fiscal Crime Liaison Officer (FCLO) Network is responsible for gathering intelligence and facilitating international co-operation with host countries in support of these priorities. Their operations cover the full range of HMRC activity and are particularly concentrated on organised criminal attacks on indirect tax regimes and the pursuit of criminal finances and other assets.

This involves working with customs and law enforcement agencies in Poland to develop intelligence leading to the investigation, detection and disruption of organised criminal gangs targeting the UK by tobacco and alcohol smuggling, VAT fraud, money laundering and other fiscal crimes.

The successful candidate will join a dynamic team working at the forefront of the fight against organised crime. The jobholder will be expected to assist with the day-to-day office administration, including inputting and translation duties, and will need to demonstrate excellent organisation skills with a practical approach to multi-tasking. This is an exciting and challenging role which will enable the jobholder to develop an understanding of HMRC strategic priorities on fiscal crime and how we are working to promote them within country. The Liaison Office is fully committed to the professional development and training of its staff.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

This role involves the jobholder providing essential office support functions to enable the Fiscal Crime Liaison team to operate lawfully and effectively, including:

  • Interpreting and translating, by using their command of business and technical Polish (as a fluent speaker);
  • Translation and/or drafting of letters and reports both in English and in Polish, in an accurate and timely manner;
  • Conducting office administration duties, including record management and data entry, maintaining hard copy and electronic case records and ensuring case papers are filed properly;
  • Assisting FCLO with monthly reporting, including financial audit returns and office accounts;
  • Assisting with the daily running of the office, including:

  1. Managing the FCLO’s diary and arranging travel/accommodation.
  2. Organising logistics for meetings, inward/outward visits and events.
  3. Responding to general correspondence.
  4. Stationary and other office equipment replenishment and vehicle management.
  5. Ensuring security of own protectively marked material and station records that are protectively marked material up to Official-Sensitive level.
  6. Ad hoc issues.

    • Fluent English and Polish (both oral and written);
    • Strong interpersonal and communication skills;
    • Excellent organisational skills for document and record management and high attention to detail;
    • Constructive, positive and service orientated attitude;
    • Ability to follow standard operating procedures and written processes, working with minimal supervision, prioritising workloads when required;
    • Proficient IT skills and competent with Microsoft Office software;
    • Ability to respect the confidentiality of work issues and understanding the personal and professional consequences of lapses in security.
    • Experience in similar administrative roles or other previous relevant experience would be an advantage.

    This is a permanent full-time position of 5 days (37.5 net per week).

    The gross salary for this position is PLN 4,722 PLN gross per month. Working hours are flexible and staff are entitled to time-off-in-lieu for agreed extra hours worked. The annual leave entitlement is 20 or 26 days per year pro rata and the Embassy also enjoys a maximum of 14 Polish / UK public holidays per year.

    Please note that staff members are responsible for paying any income tax required by the local law.

    The successful candidate will be subject to the Polish references check and satisfactory completion of a probationary period of three months.

    Candidates must have pre-existing right to live and work in Poland for the duration of the job offer in order to apply. The British Embassy does not sponsor work permits.
